Jake
My 93 RZ Auto has been making a rattling noise when pulling away from a standstill. It sounds a bit like one of those horrible lightened flywheels folks put on manuals. It also makes the rattle if I put it in Drive and , while holding it on the brake, raise the revs to about 800rpm. Above 800rpm it seems OK. I've checked the gearbox oil, and if I did it right, there's no oil showing on the dipstick. Let me check the procedure, With the car hot and parked on a level surface, you run it through all the positions on the gear selector a couple of times with the engine running. Then turn off the engine and check the auto trans dipstick - is that right? Thanks
Ian C
Sounds about right A few seconds in each position should do. As the actress said to the bishop. -Ian

Jake
I've just been to Halfords but they only had Dextron III Is "Dextron Type T-II" the same thing as the "Type T-II" it says on the auto trans dipstick or does the word Dextron indicate an important difference? Jake
Jake' date=' Type iv only, available from Toyota at around £30 for 5 litres.[/quote'] Thanks Charlie. What about this Dextron business? Is "Dextron Type T-IV" or "Dextron IV" the same thing as the "Type T-IV"
geoffvalenti
Thanks Charlie. What about this Dextron business? Is "Dextron Type T-IV" or "Dextron IV" the same thing as the "Type T-IV" Unfortunately Jake, Dexron IV or whatever is not recommended for the Toyota auto 'boxes. it's T-IV only, I must admit that I was under the impression that you went through all the gears with the engine running, then left it running while you checked the fluid. It's certainly the way I've always done it on other automatics.
Jake
Thanks for clearing up the Dextron thing, Geoff. Through doing a search I'm seeing conflicting info about how to check the fluid level. I don't want to get this wrong. I'm not having a good month so far. Apart from blowing up my engine last Thursday, getting ripped off by my insurance company and finding my other Supra has lost all it's gearbox oil, I have tonight had a non-repairable puncture in my RZ's front tyre. Roll on July
JohnA
... Then turn off the engine and check the auto trans dipstick - is that right? nope, the engine keeps running while you're checking the level.

Lucifer
Without looking at the manual, 17mm Spanner, 14mm spanner adn a l shaped bottle or fluid pump. Bottel can be bought from a model toy store.
