Branners
Well Bolney draws closer and still no sign of a job, so Im going to have to do my sticky caliper myself. Can somebody give me a run down of exactly what I need to do to get the caliper off? Once its off I can get it over to Leons if thats whats needed, but I have never had to deal with a sticky or siezed caliper before so I dont know what I can do with it. I was originally going to drive it over to Leons but I think its sticking way too much for that, and with the pads for the front costing a fortune I dont fancy having to change them at the mo. Any help and advice gratefully received. JB
Guest Mycroft
Do you know how badly it is sticking or what state it is in, sometimes sticking is caused by a group of little faults conspiring to make the brakes bad, is the Caliper stuck 'on' or is it just not applying the pressure, I have a brake piston plate that will let you push the caliper 'out' and then clean it and then press the pistons back in. If you are near to me and if its of use, you have free access. Branners
It seems as if its not withdrawing properly (!), I took the car out for a run before putting it in the garage and found the rear tyre a little flat so I drove about 3 miles to the local petrol station and while waiting for the tyre thing I noticed a small amount of smoke coming from the wheel. I then drove it back home and stomped the brakes to see if it would ease off but I dont think it did, the car stopped in a perfectly straight line so I dont think it has jammed on, its just not clearing the disk at the moment. The plan is to upgrade to UK brakes once I get a job so an interim fix is sufficient. If I could get it over to Leons which is about 9 miles from me then he can sort it easily, he has spare calipers as well, but its just getting it there. Guest Mycroft
Taking it off and putting it back on is a bit of a palaver, if you can do it without recourse to this hassle, life is simpler. Do you know how to bleed the brakes etc? Just asking. Trust me, lots who think they can.....can't.
Guest Martin F
JB i don't think you would do too much damage if you took an easy drive over to Leons. The most extreme thing you could probably do would be to shag a pad or boil the fluid, but unlikely over such a small journey. The most likely problem is that the caliper pins are corroded, in which case you wouldn't need to take the whole caliper off.
Guest Mycroft
You could also 'blue' the disc (overheat it) and that is damned expensive. If you think it might just be the sliding mechanism do the following; Buy some spray on copper-ease from halfords, take the wheel off, undo the brake reservoir cap, clean everything you can find with a wire brush, sacrifice a spark-plug brush if you have to, then with a wooden mallet, give the whole assembly a good thrashing, don't hit anything that is flexible, cos you'll regret that, but if its metal give it a good slap! then blow off all the dust and rust, scrape rust off anything that looks like it would benefit from it, clean away again anything that has flaked off, then spray all the sliding bits with the copper-ease, the sliding bits are chromed so you should ba able to spot them! Branners
thanks Mycroft, I think Im going to drive slowly over to Leons, I had forgotten about bleeding the brake system afterwards and everything else that goes with it. Can you also let me know what sort of price you can do UK spec brakes for? email branners at btinternet.com if the messenger isnt working.
