SupraDan24
This is for a mate of mine who's just passed his test, not for me. He's looking for a modern diesel, new as possible (04-06 preferably) for his budget of 3-4000. He's not bothered about looks, he just wants something comfortable, good on fuel and cheap to insure. Any suggestions guys, i'm scouring the net for him as we speak. He's looking at Renault Meganes at the minute...I'm looking at Toyota's Dan
TubbyTwo
my GF has a 06 Focus TDCi sport. fairly comfy, smaller fuel tank, 40l iirc and still returns 450 miles. Downside is its a ford. lol Have a look at golfs/bora's/Passats as well.

Gaz6002
Skoda. Blows everything else out of the water, especially taking into account what your mate is after.
TubbyTwo
Skoda Octavia VRS TDi - That means 170bhp, 258lb ft of torque from 1800rpm and over 48mpg.
TubbyTwo
Just been looking at those Focus TDCi's funnily enough. They are ok, however prone to problems with Alternators burning out. ours has jsut done 40k and we have just had to have a new one. Price from ford is over £400 so recon is the only real sensible option. So something to consider.
SupraDan24
Came across this just now. Alot of car for the money, 2008 as well. Not sure if they're prone to issues though. Only 15 miles away so worth a look. Cheers Gaz, i'll look into the Skoda's
TubbyTwo
Guy i work with has a Vectra like that, could be better on fuel apparently, and also he has had problems with the injectors, which are coded to the ecu so can be expensive to replace. Its a very comfy car tho, loads of space, kicks out a decent turn of speed as well! Skoda's should eb good, as VAG family, main things to watch out for with those are the bosch AFMs can be fragile. Gaz6002
that bad then lol We run an Auris HSD as part of our long-term fleet and it's hateful and boring to drive, yet not that economical either. It's a car for people who don't like cars. I doubt the OP will find anything with better value than a Skoda. They really are that good. Dnk
I'd do a short list of cars that your mate is interested in and get some insurance quotes on them before you start looking to buy
