HTC Desire HD-Need Help/Advice

Paul

Recommended Posts

Hi all, being a bit out of touch with phones etc. I really need some help and advice before i take the plunge :)

I've settled on an HTC Desire HD having read the good feedback on here regarding the Desire, been looking around on the net and found this deal;

http://www.dialaphone.co.uk/phone/HTC_Desire_HD/

The top offer from orange seems to tick all the boxes for me but is 500mb of data a decent amount to have? Also what are these redemption offers like, any catch with them?

One last question, any good cases available for these?

Any help really will be appreciated as I'm clueless and change my phone about every 6 yrs so well out of touch :D

IMO you'll be fine with 500MB if you have wifi at home, then when your home use wifi, and when you're out use the GSM. I use around 300 a month with heavy app downloading, emails, fb, youtube, online games etc..

1GB is a lot of data to download, id go for the 500MB a month as a start and if you need to upgrade then you can (phone operators are happy for you to spend more money). To monitor your usage use an app like phoneusage from the android market, this will keep tabs on data, calls and texts.

Hope you enjoy the phone, it's a great bit of kit! And if you want to know more about the phone etc go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=754

also t-mobile and orange are the same company and share their mobile signal.

That's what i thought, I can link to my home wifi. So if I'm fairly sensible then 500mb wouldn't be too restrictive ?

Thanks for the link, good read there.

Anyone got any feedback on Dialaphone then or these cashback redemption type deals ?

Yeah I'd imagine so. I use my phone heavily (inc tethering) on the internet and its fine. Like I said you can always upgrade your package.

Quidco is a great place to look for deals. Just sign up for an account and they have various deals for various companies. So for example if you went for orange they might have some deals through quidco. So you go to the orange site through quidco and if you choose a product/deals bla that quidco offers cashback for then you'll eventually get it (providing you stick to to the terms and conditions)..

I've got a benefits package from work that gives you links/cashback deals and Orange are offering £150 casback on a phone/contract package but this still won't touch the dialaphone deal as I also get £35 cashback from them. I'll take a look at Quidco anyway.

Ah cool, well good luck!

Though, just as a quick one, have a look at the newer incredible S. Better specs, better screen and more importantly a bigger battery (The Desire HD's battery is rather measly). difference is that its more plastic.

I pound my 3G. I hook up my HTC to my laptop and browse everything. I have even streamed football on the odd occasion and not even got close to 500mb usage.

500 is plenty bud. There's a great little app that watches your usage for you too. Warns you if you are going over etc.

HTC HD is a great phone. The only drawback is it is a little on the large side, of course that is down to the screen size so it's a compromise.

Not actually true.... They don't share the same signal...

They allow cross roaming on their networks so you get the best of both. Although there is currently talk of them having to hand back some of the frequencies.

Orange and TMobile are still independent units of a bigger company called 'Everywhere Everything'.

The desire HD is a nice device but be aware battery life is not great.

500mb a month isn't a great deal... I've been using my mifi unit for the past 2weeks and I've already plowed through 3GB ;)

To put it into perspective I'm in my 40's, have had PAYG Motorola V3i for years and don't spend loads of time out and about with the lads. At work I wouldn't get the chance to use it much only for calls and texts. At home I've got wifi and I don't do gaming, would you say 500mb would be OK for this sort of boring lifestyle ? :D

Just ordered one from Orange, the dialaphone deal was crap as you have to redeem five vouchers at smething like month 3, month 7, month 10 etc. Can't be arsed with all that and got £150 cashback from my employee benefits site anyway so got a good deal.

Paul, just be very wary about the battery life on the HD.

The 4.3" screen eats the battery life and HTC have put a smaller battery inside it (1250ma's I think) than what was in the original Desire...yeah, go figure.

If you go out and start taking some pics and vids you'll be out of juice by lunch time.

I'll be honest and say this was the phone I was going to upgrade to having had the HTC Hero but the battery life potential issue was a show stopper for me.

That and I have small hands so the HD felt like a bloody brick, just way too big and it never felt comfortable in the hand.

So I've just ordered a sh*tter then ? LOL

I've got big hands and wanted a large screen, the battery life might be a pain, will see I guess.

Having read more of your post Paul, especially about your usage I think you will be fine so don't worry.

First thing to do is just make sure you turn off any automatic updates you don't really need that will eb away on your battery.

So things like the weather updating every 5 minutes or something.

Go into the Android market and download an appkiller too, that way you can easily see whats currently running in the background and turn it off if you don't need it.

Like I said, I was very close to getting this phone, it is very very good, but I would use it more than you and so battery life was one of my key considerations.

You will love it!

the battery will be fine if your working all day

yes the screen does eat battery, i use mine for email and games while at work and it will last the day if fully charged in the morning

great phone yeap quite big and heavy, but the screen is worth that

like the other guys have said, get netcounter or simler as one of your first apps, you can set alarms for net usage etc so when you hit 450mb say it will let you know

hammered mine the first month and managed just under 400mb

phone can be fiddley to set up to start getting it just how you like it but once there its great, i liked the import when you first switch it on, imports everything from old phone, contacts, texts, music etc

Thats good advice too Paul, I used 3G watchdog...you simply set what your monthly allowance is and can check at any time. If you out your bill cycle date into it it re sets every month and counts up those megabytes as you go along and a handy green/red indicator, a bit like the battery symbol is also put on your front screen in the top left hand corner so you can keep your eye on it.
