jaymdee
Took car on a 600 mile round trip over the weekend and I have what can ionly be described as a cyclic 'thwumping' from one of the rear wheels. it speeds up as I go faster and is there at all speeds over 20mph. volume rises and lowers a bit with speed. The tone also seems to change a bit if it's wet / dry. I'm guessing wheel bearing, but when I had that last time, it was a constant drone at all speeds, which this isn't? I have jacked it up and detect no play in the wheel, it rotates fine and the brake caliper / pads seem to be functioning fine. any ideas before I check it into the local Toyota garage? (just moved to area and don't know anywhere else I can take it ) thanks
Dnk
I wouldnt take it to Toyota. Possibly a CV joint on its way out
bignum
John, has the car been sat for a while, thinking the tyres have gone out of shape, try jacking the car under the diff then put the car in drive so the wheels are spinning, just make sure its on a nice level surface so it dont fall off the jack and go through the house. RobSheffield
Do you have access to car jacks and a flat level surface? Jack it up and rock the wheel back and forth with your hands at the top and bottom and at each side. will give you an idea then. Check both rear wheels, seems that NSR wheel bearings fail often especially with aftermarket wheels and/or spacers.

Askeed people at work and just get blank looks. They don't seem to do cars up here!!?? Do you have access to car jacks and a flat level surface? Did that already and no movement in any direction - will try again tomorrow night if dry John, has the car been sat for a while, thinking the tyres have gone out of shape, try jacking the car under the diff then put the car in drive so the wheels are spinning, just make sure its on a nice level surface so it dont fall off the jack and go through the house. No mate - it's been driven. It does need new rear tyres though, so maybe one is fubar'd ? Will jack it up again and try tomorrow night cheers
Jiversteve
I have had the same on a couple of cars. If its fine for the first 20 mins or so of driving then starts.... First thing to check is whether the disc/hub is overheating. Careful, things can get very very hot. Its quite possible that a brake caliper piston has seized and the pad is continuously skimming the disk. Its perhaps time to change the rear pads, both sides and check that all pistons are free to move. Cheaper than changing the UJ's on the rear. If you have been driving like this for a while, some of the grease will have melted so the bearings and UJ will need re-packing. Any garage should be able to check this. There should be no heavy costs as the calipers are pretty standard. Edited April 5, 2011 by Jiversteve (see edit history)

jaymdee
Taken a bit of searching, but found a guy near me who does Hill Climbing and specialises in Audi's, has a rolling road etc so should be reasonably competent. Will take car down there on Friday to see what he reckons cheers
