Power Steering

I have a problem ( hope not a great one).

I was driving up to central London last night and have to admit that I was giving it a bit of stronger then normal driving.

I noticed that when I stopped I couldnt turn the steering wheel as easy as you normally can when you are stopped.

It was just fine when I was in motion(even slow traffic, 5mph) but it was very heavy when stationary. And more interesting, that it was not happening all the time but every 4 out of 10 stops(approx).

I stopped at the garage later and noticed that my left front tyre was very low on air. I topped it up and it seemed to have dissapeard.

Could it only be that I had a flat tyre and it was hard to move the wheels, or do I have a Power Steering problem?

Please let me know what you think as I was rather concerned last night.

Sorry for the great long post. Thanks for taking time to read.

Cheers Cuba

On a similar note to steering, my car has become very sensitive and pulls me all over the shop when driving. Its only happened since i had the new rear tyres put on..... could putting new tyres on bugger up my wheel alignment or could the garage have maybe somehow stupidly damaged one of my wheels? Although it feels like the front is pulling me, or could it be the rear wheels making the front pull left or right?

Cheers

Check pressure is equal in both rear tyres (not neccessarily the same as the fronts.

Something between 32->36 I guess but both tyres have to be within 0.5 -> 1 psi or you'll start noticing effects.

When you get down to a 10psi differential you'll be struggling to keep it in a straight line under acceleration.

Also check that any Directional tyres fitted are rotating in the correct direction! There's an indicator on the tyre.

Having checked all that I doubt they would have effected anything mechanical to show this pulling.

I do notice mine are a little skittish when new but after 200 miles they stick like glue.

I had this recently when I put some Dunlop SP9000's on the rear and still had Pirelli P0's on the front. The SP's were so soft they badly affected the handling of the car. High speed cornering needed constant adjustment, changing lanes was a near-death experience, if a lorry had ever driving on the road I may as well have been a passenger it tramlined so badly.

Got some P0's put on the back and the handling cleared up instantly. I thrashed the car with a big grin on my face after that, as suddenly it was fun to drive again, instead of being a deathtrap!

Dunno if this is relevant, as you didn't say what tyres you got put on and what you used to have on!

Ian,

Ian thats interesting cause i got Michelins on the front and Dunlops on the back....... very very skittish it seems to drive itself and i am constantly having to correct the car.... it seems to be possessed and constantly wanting to either drive me into the verge on oncoming traffic.
