All,

New to the forum - well rejoined after few years away, picked up a Sup which has a green HKS mushroom filter.

Posted on Newbies on the following:

The filter i have has been described as the 'HKS death mushroom' - why is this and which are the best options out there?

Thanks

Chris

The HKS filters are not great at filtering and let fine particles through which will lead to engine wear.

The best filter is the stock airbox and stock paper filter, TRD and K&N also make good replacement panel filters.

If you keep the induction kit then I'd replace with a K&N or Apexi cone filter.

Look in the for sale section, PM Keron whos a breaker/trader. Unless you have supporting mods the gains from a cone filter are minimal, and when its sitting in traffic all you're doing is sucking up that hot engine bay air. Its entirely up to you of course

Thanks mate - will read up and have a think.

Wheres the best place to get one from? Will there be any loss of power by switching back?

You'll probably gain power, all a cone filter does is suck hot air from the engine bay, the stock airbox is not restrictive, has a bigger filtration area and is sealed from the engine bay with 2 cool air feeds.

Is it a dry filter? If it requires oil then it will ruin your o2 sensor by covering it in crap. Like has been said go stock as unless your pushing 500+ stock is the best way to go.

Scared now!!!

Gonna get a standard box back on asap!!!

If you want to run the car as is for now I can supply a proper high quality filter element to go inside the HKS mushroom for £18 plus VAT. P&P is £2.80 plus VAT.

Hi Chris,

Which is the better option, your filter on the HKS or a stock box?

Thanks

Chris :)

Stock box is far better. But if anyone wants to make the mushroom filter properly I have the correct foam inserts in proper material.

Thanks for being honest Chris - think i`ll get the stock box back on there and sell the HKS filters on Ebay.

Nic, are you commenting on the triple layer filters (green) as supplied with the "reloaded" kits or the earlier filter types as tested on mkiv.com ?

The latest triple layer foam filters seem good to me, never noticed any "particles" inside the pipes leading to the throttle body and I've been using them for a good two years now. I replace the filter element every 3k miles btw.

Just to confirm the myths. When I bought my car it had a HKS filter on it. I ran the car for at least a year like this having replaced the element. I eventually changed to a stock airbox. It was a massive improvement. It was far more responsive and better performance during summer months.

I have recently stripped my engine down, and having consulted Mr Wilson I had slight pickup in the 4th cylinder which we believe to be the direct result of poor air filtration. I believe this was done whilst using the crap HKS induction kit.

Get rid of the HKS mushroom as soon as you can.

The newer 3 layer filters are better but they won't filter as well as a paper element, I'd personally choose filtration over a few hp - if indeed they actually make any difference.
