Chris Wilson
It may be of interest to know of the problem of J-Spec front turbine housings cracking around the wastegate port. I have quite a collection now and despite turbo re-conditioners saying they will "weld them up and re-cut the seat" I know from personal experience this is rarely satisfactory. I am actually looking for a few un-cracked housings, so if you want to see what to look for please look at this thread in the Wanted section. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?242504-Wanted-urgently.-Front-turbo-J-Spec-VVti-or-none-VVti-with-NO-CRACKS. Branners
Hi Chris, Can the cracking around the wastegate be attributed to anything in particular? ie are all the cracked wastegates from high boost cars, or from cars not serviced properly or just from sheer age and use? Chris Wilson
Just old age an poverty John, it's nearly always the front as that does far more work. RX-7 turbos can look simply horrendous due to the much higher EGT's of a rotary engine, whilst turbo diesel engine turbine housings hardly ever crack due to the much cooler EGT's. Tricky-Ricky
I always thought that cracking around the waste gate aperture was pretty common on internally waste gated turbos from petrol engines? regardless of car make.
Branners
Thanks Chris. So unless they are low mileage turbos then theres a good chance the wastegate is cracked? Must be getting really tricky to find a decent set of secondhand turbos.
Chris Wilson
It is getting harder, but given the number of cars being converted away from the stock sequentials there must be some around, somewhere. You can run with a crack and probably never know about it, but they do get worse with time and a re built unit is best done on a good turbine housing core, if possible. Branners
I certainly keep my eyes out for a decent set, been down the single turbo route and never again. stock sequentials with the boost turned up for me all the way.
Homer
It's definetely getting to be a more common issue. I have two sets wrapped up in the shed, both sets turned out to have housing cracks on the 1st turbo in exactly the same spot Chris' pictures show.
