Smelly smoke and brake trouble.

A couple of times now I've seen smoke coming out the exhaust whilst moving in traffic, no boost, first gear, stopping and starting.

Not sure what colour, seems white but certainly smells odd!!!!

Also my brakes are pulsing, as if the discs warped (which it might be!), but I read on here before (think it was Gordon F) that master cylinder can leak into the combustion chamber?

Coincidence that it happens when braking?

Please don't say turbo oil seals!!!

Into the combustion chamber? That can't be right, Trev.

The master cylinder uses a vaccuum hose which is connected to the intake manifold.

I once had auto gear fluid going in this way on another car, a small rubber diapghram had a hole in it in the gearbox and was sucking oil into the inlet manifold causing loads of smoke to come out the exhaust.

I put some clear tubing on this hose and you could actually see oil being sucked into the intake manifold.

Of course it can go up the servo dude...

The brake system is servo-assisted, isn't it?

Try rolling downhill with the engine off. You've got one-two brake pedal presses, and then suddenly the pedal changes and becomes really hard to press. That is it's normal state.

Start the engine, vacuum is back on, everything back to normal!

Yeah I understand the priciple now but it's not exactly an obvious reason for strange exhaust smoke if you've never heard of it before.

Jake, if you're into Vauxhalls, you get to know intimately the smell of every single automotive fluid, be it leaking raw, sizzled on the hot engine or through the exhaust.

:D
So has nobody else had white smoke except at start up?
Not at start up but I had lots of white smoke when my engine blew up last week.

WHITE smoke is either antifreeze burning or brake fluid burning. If it's brake fluid you'll have been topping up the resrvoir for weeks as it needs to fill the servo about half full before it starts to get sucked into the intake. If it's antifreeze you'd have been topping up the radiator or expansion tank as water / antifreeze got consumed. If it's engine oil it would be light blue smoke. if it's overfuelling it will be black sooty smoke.

Brake fluid looks OK, coolant bottle is near the low mark, but not needed refilling, it's not black smoke.

So that means it's light blue then!!

What would cause oil to burn intermittently (twice suring last 2 weeks) whilst manouvering in traffic?

Still drives exactly as it always did, fine boost on both tubs etc.
