Power Steering Problem

Hey ppl,

My power steering is whining all the time as soon as there is any lock put on, and to make it worse, i have a leak that i believe is coming from the pump :( could the two problems be related? Is it an easy job to service the pump myself buying all the bits like gaskets etc or will i have to take the car to have maybe a new pump sorted?

Cheers

hi mate first of all I would throughly check there is no leaks in the steering rack and if there isnt find a good second hand pump on here they usually go for around £30-£40 or a better option would be to give chris wilson a call/email as he refurbs the power steering pumps. Just depends on your budget really. Its an easy job to remove and refit took me around an hour, then I would get some new power steering fluid flush out the system(theres a guide for this on here somewhere) and bleed it to make sure theres no air left in the system

Where is the leak, is it blowing back out of the lid and when you take the lid off is it all frothy

Im not sure where the leak is from, i wiped it clean and it took a till that night to make any apperance, do you mean take the lid off when its running or off? I had a look at the fluid and it is brown so its not good to begin with...

Well Brown fluid means it's got hot or is very old,

so first off you need to do a fluid change

and while your doing that I would take the resevior off and clean the mesh filter in the bottom of it

Do a search mate, this has been covered many times

You might have to change the pump, but do the easy/cheaper things first
