Iky
Hi, i have a worrying problem with the supra. when i only turn the steering left i can hear a loud metallic tap. Its usually just the one knock noise. Is this a sign of the rack on its way out? because I can feel the knock from the gearbox bit on the rack. This happens regardless of whether the car is started or not. The car has covered below average miles. If anyone can please give me some ideas of wat to check and how, that'd be great. Iky
If you have no idea what to check or how take it to a garage if its that worrying Hi Dunk, actually im not too shy with the spanners myself but i thought this may be a known problem so would save me some time faffing around trying to trace it. Also there not many garages i trust around here anyway. Although a visit to C.W is on my future plans. I was saving for his suspension setup and now this shit happens. ManwithSupra
Hi mate, answered your PM Looking at your symptoms it sounds like to me Subframe to chassis bolts or a Worn Upper suspension arm.
Scooter
or possibly engine mounts............... I would get the front off the ground, 17mm amd 19mm deep sockets will let you tighten the subframe bolts........its normally the front ones up in amongst the cast alloy part of the front subframe that are loose. I would also reach up to the engine mount cup and try and rotate the lower alloy cups, I could move mine 10 or so degrees back and forth and it made a clunking...... If you still suspect the rack/steering, but with both wheels off it doesn't clunk, then try dropping the left side down and then moving the steering wheel to induce the noise. If you can replicate it consistently then get a helper to do it while you look, listen and feel from underneath....
Dnk
If you can feel it in the rack then thats the first place i'd be looking, best to check it out on a ramp with someone sat in the car turning the steering while you check it out underneath. You can check all the other obvious bits at the same time. bushes, ball joints, wheel bearings, arb links, play in rack, subframe bolts, etc
