eyefi
is there a way u can tell if a car has hybrids, other than by the seat of yr pants. cheers.
Terminator
I think it is very difficult to do without looking inside the housings. I believe Alex was told his car had hyrids, but found out later they were stock. I guess performance may be a bit of a give-a-way.
Ian C
You have to remove enough tubing to see the turbine, and give them a spin. Hybrids will feel more massive (i.e. harder to spin because they are steel rather than ceramic) than j-speck stock. That's about as much as you can do as a layperson. I doubt you can tell what 'stage' or type of hybrid they are without stripping them down and knowing what you are looking for. I doubt I could tell the difference between UK spec steelies and hybrids either, just by spinning the turbine. So, yes, you can fit them and not tell your insurance company -Ian

Ian C
Not that that would occur. Tut for even thinking about it! Next you'll say the injectors were sold-as-uprated as well, and turned out to be 440cc's! -Ian
eyefi
could u tell by "x" boost at "y" rpm ??
eyefi
where would b a good place to look for evidence of removal? i know it wouldnt b a cert, but it'd b a start.
Alex
If its a J-spec and full TT boost doesn't arrive till about 4k at the earliest then I would suggest it has hybrids. 3.5 to 3.8k should be ceramics. Though if there are Ignition Timing devices and uprated cams these could throw off these rough figures. And of course bigger injectors. UK spec ones are Lavender in colour I believe. No, they will need the compressor housings stripping off and the wheel and housing sizes measuring. The last hybrids i had in for a rebuild weren't, IYSWIM :-)
Terminator
I wonder how may hybrid cars actually have uprated turbo's. That's two I know of:eek:
adi
mine have cause i fitted them ! Sometimes the hybrids have a plate stamped on them saying the maker etc and thats a giveaway.. turbo technics normally do this. Of course, this is a giveaway to the insurance so im lucky in that they didnt fit one to mine
eyefi
whats involved with getting at the compressor wheel. can this b done on the car. any gaskets etc involved. forgive my ignorance ive never even seen my turbos yet.
adi
youd need to take the pipework off going to the turbos.. if its anything like the 1JZGTE then its quite a lengthy job. Even then youd need a normal turbo to compare it to.
