Help with selector bushes.

Just got my replacement aluminium selector bushes from Mr Whiffen (thanks again mate) through the post and had a quick couple of questions about fitting.

1) are the old bushes pressed into the carrier, will I need to remove the whole assembly to fit the new bushes using a press?

2) can this job be done without dropping the gearbox, or will I have to remove the prop and gearbox mount etc etc?

Hodge says he got his out without dropping the box, but when I came to do mine I had to drop the box a "bit" to get the top bolt out (it's very long and needs the clearance against the inside of the tranny tunnel).

Makes a massive difference when done, my old bushes just fell out when I removed the cradle

I just used a couple of sockets and a vice.

Bugger......I don't have a vice :(

I think I'll pull the whole thing off the car, then see if the bushes fall out like yours did. If not, I'll take it down to my local indy to press them out. Think I'll double up the selector seal while I'm there. Cheers guys.

Do the new aluminium things need pressing in.?

When people say that the old bushes fell out, it's not the whole bush assembly that drops out, it's just the centre bit because the rubber part has disintegrated with use and time. The outer bit of the bush will still need pressing out and the new bushes will need to be pressed back in.

Well, what a nightmare job that was. Dropped the gearbox to get the selector out and it still wasn't enough. I had to drop the center prop carrier too to get even more leverage on the gearbox to remove the top bolt.

So now onto my next hurdle please gentlemen. The carrier is obviously off, but how do I remove the selector shaft link (The fat bit with the spring clip.) in order for me to fit the new seal?

Yip, exactly the same trouble I had, I have no idea how it can be done without dropping the box somewhat

Well, after messing about trying to get the old bushes out and the new ones in, I finally managed it. Using a vice wouldn't move the old bushes, so a larger socket underneath the fork, with a smaller one on top.....tap tap taperooo and they're out. New ones proved to be a bugger too, heated the fork and managed to get one in halfway before it stuck solid.

Should have listened to Mr Wilson on this one, tapped out the new bush and started again, put them both in the freezer over night. The following day put each end of the fork on heat for a couple of minutes and the new bushes just dropped in, no messing.

Thanks for all your help peeps, will be putting it all back together this weekend.

Car is finally back together, difference is very noticable.

Getting the top bolt back into the carrier was even harder than removing it, due to having to worry about it lining up. I decided to use the stock car jack, and wind it against the gearbox and the transmission tunnel, so it did all the levering for me, leaving me with both hands free. Job done.
