Bicycle advice - Cycle 2 Work scheme

Unfortunately my C2W scheme is done through Halfords, but never mind, I've narrowed my search down to:

Boardman Performance Comp

Carrera Subway 8

VooDoo Marasa

Carrera Subway 2

Carrera Subway 1

The Boardman would be the best but comes out to about £25 a month, which is more than I wanted to spend ideally.

I'm lost on wheel sizes and brakes though, my route is about half road and half gravel paths, I do an 18m ascent over 4 miles but I'm really unfit so need it as easy as possible, my thoughts were a 700c wheel with narrow tyres would be best, and also a lightweight bike (Boardman ticks all those :D ), is that right?

Then the Subway 8 looks nice but I've never had hub gears before, and there are plenty of reviews that say they go out of alignment every other month and then break down completely and cost hundreds to fix!!!

Then people tell me not to go for cheap mechanical disc brakes, and choose either Vs, hydraulics or better quality mech-discs. Any advice?

So I'm now looking at the VooDoo, can't find any reviews, and the 26" wheels with rather wide MTB type tyres are putting me off - unfounded?

I have had 2 Boardmans now through the scheme and they are GREAT bikes IMO,

One MAJOR flaw though with them though

There assembled by Halfords, Young kids with Acne who think they know what there doing but dont, all they want to do is look and the dirty girls in FAST CAR, wonder off to there pimped out 106's with 15" fox wheels and jack off lol

Both bikes were assembled terribly. My Boardman mountain bike, they trapped the brake cable inbetween the forks and let me ride off like it lol

That means the VooDoo then, but it's got 45c tyres on 700 wheels, which is a bit wide for road use?

What about the Boardman mechanical disc brakes? What's the problem with hub gears, they're supposed to be more reliable and easy to own for commuters, is that not the case?
