Neil-NA
Not a technical question really i know but i could do with a bit of guidance. Is there a rough torque that the bolts should be between a manifold and decat? Reason i ask is i noticed mine was blowing slightly, so this morning i got under the car as best i could and managed to get over 1/2 turn on one of the bolts using a 6" long t-bar, what would be a rough guide to torque them up to as i dont want to snap them. All bolts are fairly new as the whole exhaust got changed 6 months ago. Thanks and sorry for the stupid question.
Chris Wilson
M10 x 1.5 should be about 20 Newton Metres for a standard low quality bolt / nut http://www.rpmmech.com/docs/tightening_torque.pdf
Neil-NA
Thanks Chris, although I think I'm past 20 nm as it is.
Chris Wilson
They shouldn't need to be very tight to effect a seal, what are you using to seal the joint??
Neil-NA
Just using the gasket that was supplied, the flanges arnt sitting flat so i was hoping to rectify it by torqueing the bolts up loads. Other option was to get the decat bent slightly but then I'm screwed when I change the manifold again.
Chris Wilson
Are we talking the two bolts and nuts that bolt the none engine end of an N/A 1st de cat pipe to the rest of the system, or the four manifold studs and nuts that hold the two legs of the N/A first de cat pipe to the exhaust manifold? Neil-NA
Stainless steel cheapo Chinese aftermarket manifold to the 2nd de-cat, just 2 bolts.
Chris Wilson
You could run a couple or three gaskets to give a more forgiving interface. Or you could use a good dose of exhaust system assembly paste and two gaskets. I'd try the latter. Or take the manifold off and grind the face flat on a belt linisher, you will need a steady hand.
