RAM question

Recommended Posts

I have an Asus P5Kc mobo with a E6850 cpu clocked to 3.5Ghz on stock cooling.

I also have a set of 2x1Gb OCZ flexXLC DDR2 PC2-6400 ram.

This setup has been fine up until now and its time for a bit of an upgrade.

This Board can run DDR3@1333Mhz according to the specs and I have got hold of a set of 2x2Gb OCZ FlexEX DDR3 PC3-12800.

Installed the ram today and its recognized in the bios and timings are assigned when in auto for DRAM. Attempt to boot into windows but it fails due to incorrect checksum not matching.

Manually set the timings to 3-4-4-12 @ 1.9v as per the sticker on it but I left the DRAM Frequency to Auto. FSB : DRAM is 1:1 and it still fails due to checksum.

Am I right in thinking that this Mobo cant run these sticks of ram or am I missing something obvious and set the timings incorrect? I am still trying to get my head around RAM specs and I keep getting confused with timing etc! lol :D

DamanC on here is your man. In the meatime... does the new RAM have the correct EC (i.e. is it EC or non-EC), and does it have the correct chip density for the mobo?

ummmm....:D

its non-EC, un buffered as is the mobo but I have just found the correct specs for the ram and its 1600Mhz.

next question then... can i run the ram at 1333Mhz in order to get it to run?

can you tell I have never clocked Ram before! lol

Have you reset CMOS to reassign all the IRQ channels?

I also did a bios update to the latest version from the asus site so i presume this would clear everything.

I have just tried the sticks again and set everything to auto except the Ram frequency. Set that bellow 1333Mhz and it still fails. One thing I did notice is in the post screen, it does not recognize the cpu ( displays an Unknown CPU warning and a bios update is needed) when this ram is installed but in the bios everything is detected correctly.

swapped it out to the DDR2 and no issues at all! Cpu recognized as it should be. reset the overclock speeds, tightened up the ram timings and all is well. Running a little hot but thats to be expected at 3.5 - 3.6Ghz on stock air! :D

well I decided to do a bit of clocking instead of getting the ram to work.....

Managed to get it to 3.8Ghz on stock air before the temps went silly! currently doing an orthos test set at 3554.92Mhz. Very stable, temps at around 65degs under load and about 39 normal.

I need a better cooler and I will be going for 4Ghz when I do!

anyone recommend a good air cooler for an E6850?

edit 2:

Ok, seems I have a dead stick. Went back to getting the ram to work. ran Memtest on each stick individually and got errors pretty much from the word go on one of them..... damn!

at least OCZ have a lifetime warranty!

  • 1 month later...

Just thought I would update this.

After concluding I had a dead stick, I arranged to send it back to OCZ under their warrenty.

The process was very easy and I recieved a package in the mail today... My brand new replacement sticks!

Very happy with ocz and the service they provided for a set of sticks I got off ebay!
