Lee Hockley
Hi guys. I have just completed my first service only to be told that I have slight play in my rear wheel bearings. The quote for the repairs are : £ 163.12 plus VAT for each of the two bearings. £ 96.00 plus VAT for the labour. Total: £ 608.93 Obviously I am not too impressed in having to pay over a grand (as I need two rear tyres too). Is this a fair price for parts ? Lee Hockley
Do you recommend a parts supplier ?
Matt C
Wouldn't know any near you mate, I live about 100+ miles away. Sorry.
Lee Hockley
For the moment, any parts dealer would be useful, just to get a price and go back to the garage to sort this out.
Matt C
Is that price from Toyota....??
Lee Hockley
They are called Westfield motors. They used to work for Toyota and specialise in Toyota repairs. Normally they are good and reliable bunch of guys ... this price, though is hard to swallow.

Chris Wilson
Bearing price is afr from unreasonable for an OE part these days. If it's not a bastard size, and only available via Toyota, you may find it available from a good motor factors, look up some local ones in Yellow Pages and ring a few. Labour price is excellent, IMO. Often the case with axle, gearbox and modern dual row hub bearings. Done on purpose to get them by the short and curlies :-(
Lee Hockley
Thanks for you advice guys ... I phones around Toyota dealers\parts and unfortunately all come to 380 - 390 quid for two including seal kits. Looks like I am going to have to lump it and get the job done as origionally quoted ... they are a good bunch of guys, after all (Chris - yeh, good price for labour). I can supply OE rear bearing kits for 82.50 plus VAT and carriage per side, if that helps?

chrispazzi
I remember this topic coming up a long time ago on another forum I belonged to. IIRC bearings all have identification numbers, which can be used to build replacements from scratch. There are specialist machinists who can make up new bearings from these numbers or simply from you giving them a bearing to copy. However, wheel bearings are critical and I've got my own view on whether I would want to use anything other than factory standard.
