stem seals shot=loss of oil?

if my stem seals are quite bad i.e alot of start up smoke pretty much every morning and not just for a few seconds but more like 10-15 seconds, can this cause alot of oil burn up (topped up 2-3 litres of oil since my last change 4000 miles ago)?

if stem seals are shot would it only burn oil on startup?

thanx guys!

Worn guides and seals will often cause vast oil burning. On start up its VERY visible beacuse the cam carrier valleys have drained a load of oil into the heads combustion chambers overnight. oil still gets used to excess in normal driving, but it's not as visual.

It probably needs guides doing as well as seals.

Keeping an eye on this thread as mine has a noticeable oil burning smell about it since my decat and the smoke has got worse. I don't think it's a problem with the decat, just that all the smoke now comes out more easily. I even noticed it today when I blipped the throttle at some traffic lights.

How much are we looking at for this job anyhow?

In a DAY???!!! You're kidding, right! It's best to sleeve or knurl the existing guides otherwise the valve seats may need a LOT of cutting and valve recession will probably occur. It's a big job, by the time everything is re shimmed and all the seats re cut et cetera. probably at least a grands worth all in.

Pah! ;)

The cost doesn't concern me (too much) but having my car off the road for a long period of time while I bum lifts backwards and forwards does, that's why I asked really. I knew it was about £1k as we've had this thread before but I also know how much hourly rates and Toyota parts can be so wondered if that was for a day ;)

I guess I'll have to keep this little treat on hold until I can either find someone really local to do it or buy a banger to use while the Supra is in being pampered.

I have a spare head at my place,if there was enough interest I could refurb ,or also port and polish, and replace the heads as an exchange item, this would reduce the downtime of your car as the head would be ready to fit and done to your spec.
