Biguns
I've just had a exhaust bung fitted as drone was getting on my tits, but a mechanic has just told me the back pressure will blow my head gasket! !!!! is this correct?
Josh
How restrictive is it?
jerkyboy18
i,ve had mine in for nearly 3 years no problem ,but i did drill a few holes to get a better sound
Biguns
its now about 2"
Swampy442
Utter crap. You need a new mechanic
Guigsy
the na stock exhaust is 2" anyway isnt it? or is it 2.5?
Graham S
Surely if they would blow the head gasket then why would the companies sell them with their exhausts! Either way, it's only an NA isn't it? (no offence intended there!) so don't see it being too restrictive!
Scott
Sounds like a "mechanic" to me.
Chris Wilson
It will increase back pressure and raise EGT's, so they are a very bad way to add silencing. It's unlikely to raise egt's enough to be an issue unless you go on track. If the exhaust is too noisy it's FAR FAR better to fit more or better silencers than fit a bung in the end of it. I think they are designed to keep the noise levels civilised for normal, pottering about, driving. For example when getting up for work and not wanting to annoy the neighbours. If wanting to open up the taps there should be as little restriction as possible. I'm pretty sure the EGTs would go through the roof if caning it with a bung in. Guigsy
if i ever fit my bung im going to put it on the wrong way arround
Swampy442
Surely EGTs are of no concern in an n/a?
Biguns
Think I may drill some 10mm holes in it just to be safe
little num
surely having a restrictor fitted will cause back pressure so will also give high EGT, but people dont have any probs with that.

It does indeed. The bung is more of a restriction though
FOSTA
sorry for being a dingbat! but what is EGTs? lol as my supra is NA-T running on stock compression with the blitz nur speck R with the bung fitted as my lass goes nuts when i take it out! lol she says it sounds like im going faster than i am! pmsfl Edited March 20, 2011 by FOSTA (see edit history)
Swampy442
EGT is exhaust gas temp.
Tricky-Ricky
It would be interesting to know just how restrictive the std system is, or some aftermarket systems are in comparison to a free flow system with a bung? Most std exhaust systems use a labyrinth rather than absorption silencers, which must put quite a restriction in flow? so i wonder just what the comparison would be, most bungs i have used have, had around a 2" opening anyway
FOSTA
EGT is exhaust gas temp. TOP MAN! cheers
Branners
On a j-spec with a 3" downpipe/decat with a stock exhaust I saw the boost go up by around 2 PSI just by changing to a blitz with the bung in. The stock system is pretty restrictive so must create more back pressure than a blitz with a bung.

Thats a TT though, we are talking N/A here, i lost nearly 30 BHP on my TT when i had a bung fitted to my old Ziggen system, 3" bore and just absorption silencers, and the bung was 2"! but has a big influence on boost, just a restrictor ring in the wrong place LOL!
