Why is my iPhone using data?

I put up a post on Facebook and a couple of my friends replied but haven't really got to the bottom of it. Firstly, I know I can turn off cellular data and this solves the problem.

Basically my iPhone is using data even if I don't step more than two metres away from my Wifi router. I've got 3G turned off (not that that particularly means anything, it can use EDGE, 2G etc instead) and I think i've turned off all push notifications and location services. So last night I reset the usage stats then turned cellular data back on. It instantly sent 3kb and received 5kb. Then I woke up, checked my emails and Facebook, and i'd received ~120kb and sent ~200kb.

Can anyone tell me why this is? and if there's a setting I can turn off, aside from turning off cellular data completely, to stop my iPhone sneaking in data usage?

Cheers

Tap home twice to see what apps are running in the background, it will display them in small app bar at the bottom.

To close them down select and hold until they start to wobble and hit the X to close it.

Ok, went through each individual app and turned the push off, and turned off notifications and location services in settings main menu. Closed all applications running in the background. Reset usage stats, turned cel data on. Wonder if i'll have any data usage in the morning.

Do you have a data usage limit on your contract? If notdont worry about it:) Im on T Mobile and Ive been told i have a 1gb limit but if Its exceeded they wont do anything, from the mouths of T Mobile staff

I get 500MB free with my PAYG allowance each month and I never go over it. It was only when my allowance ran out at the end of the month and it started charging me a pound a day for data usage that I wanted to get to the bottom of it.
