Ive managed to get a really deep splinter in my finger!!

Its been there for two weeks now and no matter how i dig or cut my finger i cant get it out,

Being a carpenter i get loads of splinters but never had one like this before its right in the pad of my index finger any ideas how to get it out ??

I usually get a nail cutter, bite my teeth and quickly cut a chunk away then a neeldle to pick the flesh around it until i get a tiny bit of the splinter, then a tweezers. Cant bare slicing my flesh id rather use the nail cutter. Hope you get it sorted they are irritating things

Leave it alone for a day or two then once it is slightly infected and a little bit of puss and give it a squeeze then hay presto it will come out with the puss! :)

I will read your post next time and realise it's been in there a while! :( can you remember what type of wood it was as some can cause nasty things!

A trip down to the local casualty dept ?

casualty probably wont touch it as it's not an open wound.

I got a massive splinter in my finger years ago and didnt realise never properly removed it all. Well 2 weeks later I realised that it wasnt hard scar tissue in my finger but a roughly 7-8mm long piece of the splinter. Went to casualty. They wouldnt touch it. Went to the doctors, got X rays but the xrays didn't show up anything (probably becaue the radiographer wouldn't listen when i showed her where the splinter was)........anyway. Although the doctor could feel the splinter under the skin she wouldn't open up my finger because the Xray wasn't clearly showing anything in there.

sooooo........5 years later it's still in there....I'm poking at it just now actually.....quite freaky being able to push it out against my skin and seeing this little pointy thing poking out.

My finger will likely fester and fall off soon !!

Slice your finger where you can feel the splinter, try your best to find it with a needle (flamed). If you can't get it out, or can't find it, you need to make a poultice. I think soap and sugar is a nice makeup for one. Go about 50/50 with each, mash them right into each other and then coat your finger in the mixture, wrap a bandage around it nice and firmly and check it in a day or 2. Try again, if it doesn't work try the makeshift poultice again.

If that still doesn't work, it's time to get the proper stuff in place. You will need to get the stuff the doctors use, try searching drawing salve.

LOL reminds me of when i was younger i took the end off my little finger (long story) anyway of to a local small country hospital and get it sown back, anyway all healed well,

but after about six months i got what i thought was a small callous

on the the finger, and it hurt when i put pressure on it,

but as usual i just ignored it and hoped it would just go away,

but it didn't, after about another six month's it was starting too bug me, so after a bit of poking and prodding, something white and hard broke the skin, it turned out to be a splinter of bone that had worked its way out.

I would have a few drinks then get a dremel and go to town on that splinter. Even if you cant get it out you should be able to mash it up a bit!

On a more serious note the heated (to sterilize it) needle has worked wonders for me with deep splinters in the past.
