Guest stormblue
I am no expert on these type of things but what I can add to the topic is when I had my vr6 golf I had the same problem. I know the vr6 is a fwd but when I hit a drain cover or bump the whole car jolted to the left. I got the garage to check it out and they couldn't find the problem. I was adamant that the problem was the shock(s). However, the garage insisted it wasn't. The problem persisted over the months so eventually I took it back to the garage. Anyway, cut a long story when they reinspected it ended out to be the shocks. I don't believe your problem to be the tyres, alhtough it would be advisable to get them sorted. Ive had balding tyres on my supra and it is more of a slide than a jolt. As I say i am by far an expert but thats my 2pence worth.
kosmic
Yes it is more of a slide...but whats made me really concerned is when i looked at the left rear this morning...OMFG!! 1 week ago the tyre was within legal tread....now this morning....almost completely bald!!1 Ive attched the picture where its going bald and you can see two wavy hairline fractures in the surface of the tyre about 1.5" apart.... http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/1433/dcfc00598yf.th.jpg
Chris Wilson
I'd put a pair of new, top brand, correct size rear tyres on it for a start and go from there. It's not on silly wheels or anything, is it?

No, its standard 16" wheels with 245/50 16 tyres.
Chris Wilson
I'd still start with a pair of new quality rear tyres, perhaps F1's?
kosmic
Sorry is that Goodyear Eagles? Would the tyres cause such drastic and uneven wear?
supRo
Yep, Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3. Have the tracking checked out and maintain the correct tyre pressure
Chris Wilson
Sorry is that Goodyear Eagles? Would the tyres cause such drastic and uneven wear? Yes, Goodyears work well on the MKIV. Tyres could indeed be the cause, and it's pointless chasing a handling problem with tyres like that still on it. You may well find new rear tyres fix it, the MKIV is VERY sensitive to rear tyres! Right, ive had new tyres put on the car....and its still doing it!!! Although not as much its still sliding aorund over bumps. Frustrated ive had my mechanic mate look at it. He's noticed there is excessive toe-in on the left rear which is scrubbing the tyre quite badly hence causing the wear. 2 Questions. 1) would excessive toe-in on the LR cause it to be sliding over bumps?? 2) What exact part of the rear suspension assembly is used to adjust/causes play in the "toe" movement?? Just noticed its very similar to the problem in this thread: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=19749&highlight=toe-in+problem I really wanna sort this out before i start doing any other bits to the car....feedback please peeps and CW matey!!! Guest Sakura
Just a suggestion, but have a look at this web site and maybe give the guy a call and see if he can help? He gives free advice, so no harm in asking
Chiefgroover
I had this problem for some time. My car used to go sideays on left had bends in the wet with NO warning whatsoever and at 70mph on an average road in traffic that was scary!. Just as well I dont panic. My problem was cured by ressetting the camber/toe on that wheel. Worth a try for you? IMO Supra's are very camber sensitive.
kosmic
Thanks guys....think the alignment all needs to be done now. I think CW was saying that the SUpes are very very sensitive to tyre/suspension geometry??

Jspec Germany
I'm convinced it's not tires as I'm on the third set in two years, all three different brands and still this happens. I think it may be multiple problems as it only slips a little when dry, but badly when it's wet, and especially bad as the tires wear more. I'm betting bushings and alignment. s crane
I think you have found your problem excessive toe-in /dont drive to far with new tyres will make them wear like old ones best of luck hope to see u at jae peterborough saturday
kosmic
Thanks mate...yep thinking the same. Noticed when i had the tyres off the rears that they had worn bold equally on BOTH SIDES?! Even though its slippy on the left rear its obviously wearing out the rears pretty bad. i went from legal tread to this in ONE week: http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/4383/image000136ar.th.jpg the tyres were worn identical on both sides...notice the two wavy lines/grooves in the centre...:thumbdown Is this the adjuster for the toe-angle? Im guessing its the cause. http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/6661/image000122nq.th.jpg
kosmic
Quick Update: Took the car out this morning to the place RUsh recommended...KLS motorsport in Greenford. Got them to do the 4-wheel alighment/geometry. Some of the settings where way out. Adjusted it and did a fantastic job. Car drives and tracks straight and true. Went over the bumpiest roads i could find and it didnt twitch one bit So the new tyres and alignment have helped greatly. BUT when turning right, the left rear becomes wallowy and weird and seems to turn a bit to easily like four wheel steering...im guessing now it must be the shocks!! But for the time being its driveable and no longer scary....

Having mine done on Monday - been off the road for so long with one thing or another, I can't wait to get back in the driving seat and not think I'm steering a shopping trolley! Jspec Germany
does anybody have actual pictures from underneath of the locations of all these bolts that need to be tightened? Thanks.
kosmic
there is a diagram showing the location of all the bolts etc and their relevant torque settings. try a search under "subframe bolts" theres a thread with all the diagrams out of what appears to be a service manual. Sakura, my main problem seemed to be crap tyres and bad wheel alignment. changing both these has has a major difference to the way the car drives, your right, it did feel like a shopping trolley at times. Chris Wilson was right again, the mkiv is so sensitive to tyres. Thank you to everyone for all your help, comments n suggestions!
