Keefred
There is a place called sgs-engineering.com that will put the ends off the existing ones on to new struts for £107 a pair, or do a regass for £50 for the pair. They are expensive new from Toyota, dont know why, if you look on e bay it seems pretty much any gas strut can be got for pretty much any car for about 1/4 of the cost of Supra ones. Nic
Do you have an aftermarket rear wing fitted? Some rear wings such as the Veilside one are heavy and cannot be supported by the stock boot struts
stevie_b
It is a common problem especially on older supras.
Chris Wilson
Anyone know how they re gas them? I have nitrogen and air and the means to re gas many dampers, but I am assuming these need some sort of muff around them to refill them? Anyone seen it done? Thanks. Digsy
I thought this had been gone into before and the conclusion was you couldn't re gas the stock ones? The Toyota parts are expensive, but once you've been hit on the head half a dozen times by your tailgate, the valve for money starts to become self-evident. Keefred
No idea how they would re gas them, sounds dangerous, but they do offer to have a go, though maybe 'some' struts are a bit rare Thank you for your enquiry. New gas struts are available at a cost of £107.76 for the pair delivered (£41.75 per strut plus £6.30 carriage and VAT), are covered by a two year guarantee and are available on next day delivery. Yes, we need the original struts in to swap the brackets over on to the new struts and new fixings. Some struts can be re-gassed depending on their condition so a visual inspection by us must be made in order to assess your struts, which is free of charge. If you try a re-gas and it is not successful within the warranty period we will discount the cost of the re-gas from new gas struts purchased from SGS Engineering. A re-gas is £49.56 delivered for the pair (£17.50 per strut plus £6.30 carriage and VAT) and struts are usually turned around within three working days. Payment can be made via credit/debit card and you will be contacted for payment once your struts have been tested and are ready for dispatch

keef701
My tailgate has a TRD spoiler fitted and the standard dampers struggle to hold the tailgate open. After numerous hits by the tailgate when reaching into the boot, I got fed up and found that the easiest way to keep the tailgate open was to very slightly bend one of the dampers. Easy to do, just open the tailgate fully and when stood by the side of the car, gently push the damper sideways. Just do gentle pushes, and keep rechecking that the tailgate shuts smoothly. Cheaper than replacing a pair of dampers! Has worked perfectly on mine now for quite a while.
Chris Wilson
Friction dampers then I once had a mate who had a dead rear damper on his Escort and bent the piston rod enough to make it bind tightly, it got him back from his hols without the back axle hammering up and down all the time, not that I'd recommend it.
