Diagnostic code - Is this one to worry about?

Decent weather today so a good opportunity to look at this irregular warning light I sometimes get.

I haven't checked the diagnostics myself before and made use of some needle nose tweezers to join the E1 and TE1 connections.

I know this is a bit lame but humor me, below is a hugely exciting youtube video of the code which I am reading as a single error code of error 42.

Which points to this error code in the diagnostic thread...

I have heard of dodgy speed sensors causing this but is it anything to worry about? The car is Jspec but seems to have been converted to mph when I got it. Is it simply that the speed sensor stops reading for 8 seconds when I am driving or something more serious? I am guessing coolant at 80 degrees is fine on a supra.

Where abouts would the speed converter be on the car and is it possible to replace with one that does not cause this code? It's hopefully not a big deal but I dont want a warning light for this popping up potentially when something more serious needs addressing.

Cheers guys

Dave

There is plenty of info on CODE 42 on the forum, if the car is a manual then this error will not have any major effects on the car (you will notice that the steering wheel will feel lighter and if you have an active spoiler this will not work as per design) - if its an Auto - there might be an implication on the gear changes too.

a good quality speed converter should fix the problem - Thor ones seem to be highly recommended.

Hmm the car is an auto, could this possibly point to why my overdrive function does not work also? I have had a search on the forum and there are several threads on diagnostic codes but only a few on 42.

This one seems useful...

But seems incomplete. Seems it is basically saying that I can cut one of the pink wires on the speedo and the problem will go away.

There are 2 speed sensors Dave, both in the tail of the transmission, SS2 is for the speedo, I think SS1 is for the ABS & TC?

um david not 100% correct. speed sensor one on the trans makes the speed signal in a semi digital wave, the job of speed sensor two in the speedo is to clean up the signal to a pure digital signal for the engine ecu,spoiler,trans....

what the often carried out mod of cutting the pink wire and joining it to the blue does,is supply the engine ecu with the unfiltered signal direct from speed sensor one.bypassing the faulty sensor two.

I'll have a root around this weekend and see what I can see, the clocks are aftermarket Defi ones. Couldn't fine more info about his pinik wire when searching. Is this a pink wire that comes from my aftermarket clocks that I join to the blue wire.

Are there any issues with joining it to the unfiltered sensor one (innacuracy etc) and if I do get the overdrive sorted would joining it to sensor one cause any issues with that?

Sorry for all the Q's

To clarify, this usually has one of 2 causes: a broken aftermarket speed converter, or a broken speed signal buffering circuit in the odometer. If the DSC is at fault, then the best thing to do is to replace it with another one. It's usually lurking behind one of the dash panels.

If the buffering circuit is at fault, then that's where you'll probably get joy from cutting pink wires etc. I don't have the details to hand, but I know there's loads of info on here about it. I wrote a fair chunk of it. :)

Edit: looks like a lot of the code 42 info has been cleared out by the Thread Reaper. :( I did find these though:
