LolaBoost94
Hey guys, I searched the forum and couldn't find anything... do we have any military folks on here that know how many cars a single person is authorized to have registered through the base in England? I'm headed to RAF Molesworth with my Lola (94 TT) and want to get a daily driver and keep her for the "nice days". Some people have told me I can have two cars but have to plate them a certain way and insure them a certain way but wanted to know for sure before I got there so I can get a beater when I first land. Lola will take a few months to get there. In Japan, a single person is only authorized one vehicle Thanks for any help!!! Arin
Swampy442
Im an Airforce type millitary folk but have no idea authorisations. Was it bought in Japan, if so it will be a personal import so you will have to register it, MOT (safety check) tax etc to make it road legal here. You can just buy a beater here. On our bases you can own and keep as many cars as you like but not sure if US run bases have different rules.
LolaBoost94
I got her in northern Japan and will be imported to the UK. Not looking forward to the MOT but gotta do it. Hopefully I can have more than one car. What base are you located at?
Swampy442
Compared the the Shaken the MOT is a walk in the park, its just basic safety stuff, tyres, brakes, emissions, lights. If the car is well looked after you wont have a problem Im at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, not far from London. If you have any questions about importing your car speak to Jurgen, he does it for a living, he would probably bring it in for you and sort everything out
LolaBoost94
Yes, Japan's inspections are horrible!!! Good to know though. Thanks for the awesome information. The military is actually shipping it for me but I've spoken to Jurgen before... very well respected mate and super nice! I won't be too far from you! I'm sure I'll see you around and hopefully at some meets once I get settled in. There's a WSPA office in London that I plan on volunteering at so I'll be around that area often. Good day! Homer
There's loads of Military folks on this forum so I am sure they will be able to offer some good advice. With regard to the import, as Swampy mentions, the MOT is pretty much a walk in the park - as long as the car is in roadworthy condition there won't be a problem. You will need to fit a rear fog light though, a simple enough job. If you plan on driving it here for >1 year I am almost certain it will need to be registered in the UK, which will mean you need to pay import tax on it. Since you are already in contact with Jurgen you already have the best person to advise. Best of luck and welcome (soon) to the UK
Swampy442
Theyre bringing your car over for you?? Dont get that treatment from the British forces, then again we're lucky if we dont have to buy our own boots lol. At least your car will get here in one piece and not raped by the stevedores for anything remotely valuable lol. WSPA? Good on you So what do you do then? Must be sneaky beaky intel stuff if youre going to Molesworth
LolaBoost94
Good thing I've saved up a good bit from this deployment Bad thing though, my house in Japan got trashed so I'm sure I'll be replacing a lot of things. Only time will tell. Thanks again for the good information and soon-to-be welcome ... at least now I have a pretty good idea as to what to expect. I did finally get in contact with a friend at Lakenheath (perfect timing right). He said I'm good to go on owning more than one car but I'll have to pay the road tax on the second car. Well worth it if it means keeping Lola off the roads in crappy weather! Let the good times roll
Swampy442
Alot of us run a second car, me included. Yeah its double the running costs but means you wont get your Supe covered in salt and crap during the winter
Shadow Beast
I'm ex military and there was lads on my old bases with 2-3 vehicles, You'll get a car pass for the barracks and for each vehicle, which you'll show at the camp gate when you come back from being out and about in your car. The only problem you may have is parking spaces, some camps are getting quite full up at the mo. Richie

Must be sneaky beaky intel stuff if youre going to Molesworth I'm going for a special duty... Postal I'm actually Supply right now for the F-16's. I can't wait to get this nice two year break from my prime career field. What do you do?? Ya know, they didn't even provide us with uniforms for our deployment to Iraq. It's getting crazy these days! I'm ex military and there was lads on my old bases with 2-3 vehicles, You'll get a car pass for the barracks and for each vehicle, which you'll show at the camp gate when you come back from being out and about in your car. I'll be lucky enough to live off base and from what I've found so far, one car garages seem easy to find. The beater can sit outside but my Lola needs a garage. She's too good for the rain and stuff Richie With all the stuff going on in Japan, hope your OK. From an ex-military man Thank you! Means a lot. Bad part, I'm stuck in Iraq and can't even help out back in Japan. My house is going to be fun cleaning up, I'm sure Hopefully it isn't too bad off. Guest WhyTry?
blast of the past from this post... selling my skyline to get a Supra in hopes i can take back some type of fun to the US... i know skylines are out of the question to import to US until Jan 2014 (R-32) but is there any big deal getting a Supra back... same thing Military would be shipping but dont know all the in's and outs on the Supra world but look forward to the move over... just cant see myself paying 20K plus for a 1994 in the states so is it possible and do you know what is needed (glass, lights, etc). Thanks and i am also at RAF Molesworth/Alconbury
SupraAyf
It's the norm for one guy to have one car but in theory you can have as many as you wish as long at the hierarchy signs it off - the cars must be in your name though. Shadow Beast has already underpinned the issue of parking availability so you will need to drop a friendly word (written letter) in your bosses ear (i.e. Deputy Station Comd or Base Adjt) to get authority to store the vehicle during any subsequent deployment phase. They are quite stringent on this because the military holds no responsibility whatsoever for the security of your vehicle(s) while you are deployed on operations or posted on temporary duty. LolaBoost94
Japan's amazing... I loved Misawa. Well, as in the area cause I love to snowboard but out supervision was HORRIBLE!! The only thing really holding us back from getting them to the states is airbags. In the states, they manufactured them with airbags, JSpec didn't. If you can get a UK version, you may be able to get Toyota to petition it but it's unlikely. Good luck
