Starting Issue on an Auto, help and advice needed

I have quite a simple problem, when I go to start her up, sometimes it just clicks, if I give the Auto changer a nudge and then try and start her again she usually starts.

Is there a switch in the lever to recognise it is in Park and is it replaceable/repairable or do I need to replace something else, also were is it located and how do I get to it

Cheers Rog

Could be the starter motor on the way out.... I would doubt it would the the auto lever...:)

It won't be the starter Rob, everytime it does it, a quick wiggle or nudge of the lever and she fires no problem

Does the lever have a cable or is there a sensor, sorry new to the Auto and can't find anything from the search menu

Basically I need to know how does the car know it's in Park to allow the ignition to fire

It's possible there is just a lot of dirt in the mechanism I guess, but I don't think it will be that

I've had a few do that, taking the switch out and some contact cleaner usually works, depends how worn the switch is. Does it start if you move it into neutral?

Not sure about the neutral bit, I have only had it a few days and if i literally nudge the Lever it starts no problem, but it seems to do it nearly every time

Where is the switch located and I will try cleaning the contacts tomorrow

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry Rob missed your post, but had the lever out yesterday, well not right out, but you know what I mean.

Anyway my conclusion is it's not to do with the lever as it shows on the dash that it's in Park or Neutral (to answer a question from earlier, it does exactly the same in Neutral)

Well I think from going through the CJ manuals it can only be a couple of things

Hopefully with slight adjustment to either the Neutral Start Switch or the conection between the lever and the Neutral Start Switch, it will be sorted.

If that doesn't work then I guess the next thing would be to replace the Neutral Start Switch, would I be right in thinkng that this switch is responsible for Park and Neutral Starts even though its named NEUTRAL Start Switch

Has anyone else done any of the above and are they resonably easy to get at, the CJ manual doesn't give a good idea of access, from the looks of the pics it's on the passenger side of the Auto gearbox

Any help gratefully received

May also be the switch on brake peddle

brake pedal switch is only for canceling cruise control if you have it and removing the lock from the gearlever so that you have to have your foot on the brake before selecting a gear from park

yeah definately not the brake switch, but thanks for the input

Okay all sorted I think

I have done a few things today to do with this, started by doing the adjustments to do with the Neutral Start Switch and the conection between the lever and the Neutral Start Switch, made no difference, other than making the Gear Selector more precise and solid

So I got to thinking about the starter, even though I didn't think it was faulty

I got under the car to check the main Electrical feed, when I pulled back the rubber cover, loads of water and crap came out, so I got covered in it, not amused.

I undid the nut, which was not very tight and gave the conection a good clean and covered it in loads of WD40 and but it back together, a lot tighter than when I took it off

and it seems to be fine now, so if you get an intermitent starting fault, check this conection for water and make sure its tight

I can only pressume it wasn't giving enough electrical feed to turn the starter everytime, the wigling of the Auto lever to get it to start must of been coincidence

And to RobUK your first guess of the Starter being on the way out was nearly right
