Lude
ive just re-installed windows XP, sound was working fine before. now its not. gone to device manager, multimedia audio controller has the yellow exclamation mark on. ive tried getting a codec for it, everywher on the net says Realtek, so ive downloaded that. everytime it trys to install it, it crashes. now if i un-install realtek, and tell device manager to search it always trys realtek. i need to find out what soundcard i have & get correct driver, but cant find it? gone to dx diag, sound tab & it says no sound card found how can i get what sound card & what driver? Guest ugp
Whats the make / model of the pc? Is the card onboard or in a pci slot? If its a custom job, whats the model number of the motherboard?

The-Plethora
You may find if you update to the latest service pack that it has drivers available. Realtek stuff is generally onboard stuff but very well supported I have found. As ugp says if you know the details of your motherboard that will help. Alternately if you can take the side of the PC case off and have a look around it will help. Realtek chips (audio / network etc) generally have a chip on the board and written on the chip is a code, something like RT6157 for example. If you type that into google you usually find the driver you are looking for.
The-Plethora
If you are still struggling, download CPUz at the link below... http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html It's basically for telling you how fast your CPU is running but when you run it you can see it has a mainboard tab, have a look there and it should tell you the name of your motherboard. Scott
Were you searching for porn for the first 3 hours? First thing I always search is the model of PC on the make of the PCs website, kind of stupid not to TBH. It's when it's not there that things can get tricky
