in the middle of my brake upgrade, few Q's

Get some penatrating lube like plusgas on the flare nut threads and where the pipe goes down through the nut and take it steady when undoing the nut.Try not to let your reservoir run dry, if you get air in the master cylinder it can be a bitch to bleed out.

well guys all the new brake lines are sorted everything was cool, bled the 2 rear brakes and they seemed to bleed easy enough, got to the doing the fronts and everything was great until i got to the last caliper bolt :( i think i may have cross threaded one of the bolts ive got it off and ive had to leave it for the night as i am just knocking the caliper and the plastic coat is coming off :( will see how things look in the morning

 

dont supose anyone knows if it is possible to take a thread off the nackered half of the old caliper thats got the siezed pad pins in and use those ? its always the last sodding bolt

oh yes you can coz ive just took it out :D happy days job for tomorrow now i am hungery and tired and need a vodka :D

You mean the thread insert that is in the caliper lugs to hold the caliper to the hub upright? Or a thread in one of the caliper halves where the other half bolts on? Both are metric fine, the caliper halves use 6mm x 1.00 thread, which is very unusual, and to find decent bolts of the right length is a nightmare, but one which i have overcome :) I also have the correct taps to attempt a resurrection of a damaged thread, plus I have the correct Helicoil kit to repair a dead thread.

 

If it's the thread inserts you may be able to use one from another caliper, can't say I have ever tried. I have the taps to clean up a damaged thread, but it would mean you sending the caliper back to me.

thems the ones buddy, i am about to go fit the last caliper to the car then bleed the fronts calipers , massive thanks too you aswell Chris for putting up with my random PMs of mad questions lol :D

Has no one on the base got a metric fine tap to chase the tread out with? If not you could try removing an insert from the old caliper half and see if it comes out OK before attacking the rebuilt one. I'd use a new or good bolt rather than the old one if the bolt thread looks less than perfect. Re threading a rolled thread HT bolt with a die is bad practice as it weakens the bolt significantly. I don't have a UK front caliper here to have a mess with, but I am 60% sure the thread "bobbins" will come out and swap over.

thats what ive done chris i bought a right rear half from Justice because the pad pins are still stuck in the holes so i ditched my half and used the half from Justice , so ive got a buckshee rear right half now minus one of the inserts for the mounting bolt and the bolt looks fine just the thread on the insert looked badly crossed

i have a spare half that is having nothing done with it and 2 near brand new UK pistons along with a few uk spec used with abit of damaged chrome on, do you want them ?

 

ive got everything done now and it feels like it takes alot for the car to brake it feels like i only get a decent bite when the brake is most of the way down i.e nearly fully depressed , what have i done wrong when bleeding the brakes ?
