Multics
I'm moving up norf in two weeks and need to travel to London once a week (400 miles return trip). I need a comfortable(ish) motorway cruiser that is cheap to buy and does at least 40mpg. What do you suggest?

Multics
5-7 year old German diesel saloon It looks like the Diesel/German combination makes sense indeed. Not cheap though, have so many expenses at the moment with moving house...

ManwithSupra
How much do you want to spend? I have a Ford Focus MK2 1.8 TDCI Zetec which i constantly get around 60-70mpg on the motorway (70mpg driving like a gran). Its comfortable, well equipped (Heated front windscreen, Air con, Electric Windows, Multichanger CD blah blah) and pretty nippy for a deisel and nothings gone wrong on it apart from the usual consumables (Brake discs, wheel bearing, Alternator). I do around 3k miles a month in it... Cost me £5k a couple of years ago, now you can pick them up for around the 3.5k mark.

hogmaw
I'm thinking of the same thing, edging towards an Audi 2.7 Tdi but they aren't too cheap
XIL007
i do around 550 miles a week in all weathers. I had a little pug 206 van 2003 .1.4.hdi. it did my weekly drive for around 20 pounds with no problems, bet now there cheap to buy. my golf does the same journey for 40 pounds a week. Id defo change back to a 206 after the golf very good on juice, cheap to tax, wheels are small as well so tyres are cheap
