Strange heater problem

Ok, bit of a strange one... went to pick up the mrs from work tonight, heater on in the car warms up no problem gets nice and warm in the car...

Get to her work (about 15 miles drive) park up and turn the engine off for about 5 mins, she comes out, start the car back up and off i go...

No hot air coming through on the drive back though? Fans are working but only blowing cold - got home (cold) left the car running on the drive for a while but couldnt figure out why there was no hot air coming through?

So, i did the sensible thing and retired to the house for pancakes... go back out an hour later, fire her up and bam... hot air again...

Should i just put this down to a one off or is there something specific that i can check?

Cheers folks :)

If it doesn't happen again then I wouldn't worry about it.

Cool :)

Warmed up fine again this morning, kept turning the heat up and down on my way to work and it was getting hot\cold no problems at all... Must have been a Supra Gremlin or something :)

^ No, all i did last night was feel the temperature of the hoses and gave them a bit of a squeeze - they were hot though.

Ill check the coolant this evening before it gets dark - its not long had all the fluids changed though so perhaps there was an air bubble in somewhere which has just freed itself up and caused the coolant level to drop a bit?

Could be an airlock, coiuld be a sticking thermostat

Yes a sticky thermostat could also be at fault, when your driving keep one eye on the temp gauge and if it creeps above where it normally is then be carefull and get a new stat fitted, i'd also fit a new rad cap as well as there know to cause problems

I've kept a good eye on the temp gauge - sits constantly just below half way which i believe is "normal"?

Any recommendations on a new rad cap? Is replacement OEM spec one ok or best to go for one that handles more pressure?

Its a 3.0 NA by the way.

Sounds pretty much like theres been an airlock in the heater matrix due to the system not being fully bled of all the air.

Dont forget to check the expansion tank is approx 50% full when the engine is cold.

I thought airlock initially i must say, i will check everything later on to make sure there is enough coolant in the tank... there are no leaks anywhere that i can see either, no water or anything on the drive at home etc.

Thanks for the quick replies and helpful advice everyone :)
