Babe
I've just found out that the government are trying to sell off our national Blood Service. Don't you think that is disgusting? People give blood to save lives, not to make money for big bosses. There is an online petition below... you can also share it with your Twitter or FaceBook profile from there, or just paste the link below on your page. http://action.unitetheunion.com/Say-no-to-blood-money Thanks! imi
No link there that gives us the full story behind this so excuse the elementary questioning: Perhaps there is a lot of wastage in running this service and better efficiencies can be gained by privatizing it. Sure privatizing will end up turning it into a business but perhaps it will be a better system for all of us to benefit from? Who knows... ozz
Nothing wrong with making money if it drives service improvement. I'd want to know a lot more before condemming it. Having worked for local government I know they are often not the best group to run a bath let alone a company. Thats a bit tongue in cheek, my bro is a senior accountant with the health service and his is one of the few doing well...

stevie_b
There's 2 sides to this: 1) Hoped-for efficiency savings as already mentioned. Govt departments can be notoriously wasteful and inefficient. 2) Is privatisation the best way to deliver efficiency savings? I think possibly not. It'll be efficient internally, but will probably cost the NHS more to use its services than is currently the case. I don't think businesses like this lend themselves well to privatisation. There'll either be competition introduced with other firms competing for NHS contracts, or it'll be a privatised monopoly, basically a license to print money. I'd want the govt to employ some decent management consultants for 2-3 years to turn the business around and remove wastage, but still keep it in the public domain. Charlotte
I still don't see any evidence that this is actually going to happen. You're right Steve - some decent management consultants would be the best way forward for a lot of public sector work.
Guest steven27
I believe it should be privatised as the managers sit on there behinds and hundreds of hours are wasted and paid for by tax payers money staff sit aroun half the day while mangers are off to town to meet there wifes the majority of time there is no transport manager available at newcastle depot leaving staff to deal with all emergencies please privatise this company hundreds of thousand will be saved theres so much lazyness espescially by managers in transport department so i say PRIVATISE IT AND MONEY WILL BE SAVED THOUSANDS especially when the hospitals pay the NHSBT for the blood they recieve so only one making money here is NHSBT as they get the blood for free from donors
Guest steven27
Thats what they are doing making money for the big bosses if you know that blood donors dont recieve money so blood is free to the blood service then one its been checked and cleaned it is then sold for extortionate ammount to the hospitals to pay the wages for the lazy staff that sit around most the day and managers that are hardly there money could be better spent running the service more efficiently by privatising it i hope they do looking forwad to a better sevice from a private company
