The bog won't flush.

My toilet randomly stopped flushing today, it's been getting a bit worse for a couple of days then this morning stopped completely. Get a little trickle but won't flush.

From my research over the last 10 minutes, I need a new flap valve in the syphon? Looks like I have a pretty standard system with an inverted U bend thingy, big chamber with the rod sticking out the top, little hook thing and a handle out the front of the cistern.

Is it better and easier to just buy a new syphon? They seem to only be about £5, and if I have to take it out to replace the flap I might as well replace the whole thing?

So what do I need to measure to make sure I buy the right one? Example. There are 8" and 9" and 9.5"...... what does that relate to? Do I need to get the right size pipes out the bottom and stuff as well?

Just be careful how vigorous you are when you throw the bucket of water. Its better to use 3 bucket fulls gently than one bucket thrown enthusiastically and turning you into the Effluant Man. :)

Lucy's bog has had this problem for a few weeks. Its like kickstarting a 2-stroke - you need to waggle the lever a few times first until you feel the compression, then prod it quickly and it usually works.

They're not necessarily a standard fitting. Stick a picture of it up and i'll see if I can identify it for you :)

Here are some nice pics of it, doesn't look like the type I can unscrew from the bottom of the cistern and lift out - but looks like I can slide the main part up and leave the downpipe in there? Like it's in 2 or 3 parts?

You're lucky, you've a "turbo" syphon :) unscrew the blue nut, take the c-link out of the handle and lift out. No need to remove the cistern from the pan.

You'll find the circular part to have a plastic "diaphragm" in the bottom, this will be split or partly missing, take it to the plumbers merchants, replace and re-assemble!

Easy!

Looks like a cylindrical/round 'Metro' Syphon to me.

image (from:http://toiletparts.co.uk/toilet_syphons_26.html#) have a shop around though :)

IIRC it should have "METRO" stamped in the blue plastic. They come in various heights etc, though that should not matter as you should just be able to unscrew the chamber and leave the down pipe in place. If you do need the height, this is where you measure it:

(the bottom measurement will be the bottom (internal) of the WC cistern)

It's not a turbo syphon, and the diaphragm won't work as the mounting hole is offset. :)

Thanks!

It does have 'Metro' on it as well, just needed a wipe to see it. Looks to be about 220mm, but I'm having trouble unscrewing the blue nut, might have to take the ball out to make room.
