caseys
http://www.money.co.uk/article/1006498-new-compulsory-car-insurance-laws-how-to-stay-legal.htm I only heard about this today, maybe I haven't been keeping up to date on things, but I'm sure you had to generally declare cars SORN? Is it just some media kicking up a stupid fuss?
PJ
From reading that article, if you've got a car/bike you use infrequently and it has valid road fund license and is not SORN'd then it has to be insured regardless of whether or not it is in use or on the road. If it is SORN'd then it doesn't need to be insured.
j_jza80
It doesn't really seem like much of an issue, surely if you're not using it, it would be SORN anyway?

marbleapple
That. I didn't realise that a vehicle currently doesn't have to be insured if it's not used, even if it's on a public road. Eh? If it is on a road it must be insured. It can't be on a public road and SORN'd - I thought?
johnny g
SORN = Statuatory Off Road Notification, by name implies the vehicle must be off the road.

See I was wondering of the situation i.e. you have a car that you are no longer using, or not using for a brief while, so let insurance / MOT expire, but the tax is still valid - it will now need insurance, where previously it didn't. I thought SORN was the state it had to go in if you didn't have any valid RFL/Tax for it?
stevie_b
If it is on a road it must be insured. That's what I thought but the article implies otherwise. It implies a car must currently be insured according to whether it is in use on the road, not whether it is on the road. According to the article I could park my car on a public road, and cancel my insurance as long as I don't drive it and keep it taxed. Under the new legislation, it would need to be insured whether or not it gets driven, unless it's declared as SORN and stored off of a public road. That's how I interpreted it anyway. tbourner
I thought that's how it was now? Basically the only thing that will be affected are cars that are on your private land but not declared SORN. As mentioned that must be very few people who have a car off road and carry on spending out on it rather than SORN it.
marc_p
This p1sses me right off as I currently have 3 cars I keep then all Taxed but only 2 are insured at any 1 time as I am constantly swapping which one is on the insurance(Admiral Multi-car won't let me add any more cars to the policy) So it's going to really cost me having to SORN and re-tax the car. At the moment I just ring Admiral for 2 mins and have a car swapped. It's just another way to really annoy me.
