Dragonball
My desktop was frozen when trying to shut off - so I hit and pressed the button and it duly closed down... standard numpty response Now when it boots up it only shows the 'documents' screen oh and the screen saver photo- no start and icon tray - Switched on/off etc Have tried to open in safety mode - still the same Tried reopening to prior config - still same Tried safety with command prompt and only shows run documents Could anyone please advise me what I should do when I get home tonight? Many thanks
stevie_b
What OS are you using? XP? 7? I would be tempted to repair the installation. If you don't have an installation CD for it, I think Windows lets you make a recovery disk using a different computer (not sure where, it's ages since I've had to do it). Before you try anything, try to back up any important docs/photos/emails/etc you have: you can probably bring your PC back without too much drama but it's still a good idea. Sorry if that's a bit vague: all from fairly distant memory. EDIT: by "recovery disk", I actually meant "system restore". Don't use the System Recovery option from a hard drive image unless as a last resort: you'll roll your PC back to the day it left the factory. Scott
Try CTRL-ESC If that doesn't work hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, click the "File" menu then click "Run", type in "Explorer.exe" and hit enter. If that doesn't work I would try a system repair (complex depending on the OS) If that doesn't work it's re-install time.

How do you "run explorer" without first clicking the "File" menu and clicking "New Task(run...)"?
