RobD
No change here! My signal's crap around cambs to, ESP at work! I'm thinking about changing networks when my contract runs out, I've been with vodafone 7-8 years now and the service has gradually got worse and worse! Think it maybe time for o2! JustGav
Someone broke into their DataCentres apparently..... although why they don't have redundant configs is beyond me... guess they need a proper data centre designer
BazzaAlpine
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12595681 God knows what they were trying to do? Cable theft or something more sinister?

KamaSupra
I had lost my signal at my house in Basingstoke this morning on my 2 phones, but I have signal back on one but not the other. Strange as they're sat next to each other and both on Vodaphone
hogmaw
The switch gear in these data centres is worth serious cash. What do you do with them? I can't see them being flogged off in a pub or a car boot. Perhaps they were after the copper

Perhaps they were after the copper There's a huge black market for this sort of gear. We had several break-ins when I used to work for a telecoms firm in Basingstoke. The worst turned out to be an inside job and the guy made serious cash before getting caught.
JustGav
Wonder who i know who lives around there..... you aren't the first oddly enough, the mad professor asked me this morning if I now had a full sized gsm base station at home... didn't quite know what he meant till I read the news What do you do with them? I can't see them being flogged off in a pub or a car boot. Perhaps they were after the copper No, while there is plenty of copper in a DC, there are much better copper targets. The kit used in these places is surprisingly expensive being telco carrier grade and as Gaz says there is a market for it.... maybe not here in the UK but elsewhere I'm sure there is. PJ
Seriously crap or untested DR procedures they've got there by the looks of it, I'm very surprised to be honest, you would have thought that they would have some resilliance in the loss of a data centre. Some people in Vodaphone are going to be getting a serious spanking over that!

PJ
The techies will take the kicking although I can promise you it was management who said the infamous words 'It will be too expensive and it will never happen'... been there... LOL true enough - I work as a Unix Sys Admin at the moment and we are forever performing failover's just to check that they work correctly and ensure that we aren't in a position where we can't failover services to run from a different location. PJ
Some users are reporting that a network signal is now being indicated on their handsets and some text messages are being received. However, voice calls, voicemail and mobile data services continue to unavailable in many parts of the south and south west of England. It is expected that this will continue for the rest of the day, and it is not recommended that businesses rely on the Vodafone network until we are satisfied that normal service has resumed. With an outage of this size, once the network has recovered the likely call volume and data usage by all Vodafone users is likely to have a secondary impact on network stability and availability. Further update calls are planned during the afternoon with Vodafone senior management and the next update will be released after 4pm. Latest update on this at my work
