Digital
Hi guys, I have a few questions about TT-propshafts. As we all know, for the TT AT's and MT's, the rear part(near the diff) have the same lenght, but are they safely interchangeable? I ask this because if I look at the 2 pieces of a TT-propshaft, both pieces have "balance-plates"(don't know the correct English). Is each part balanced for it's own or is the whole propshaft balanced and should stay together? If it should stay together, how is it marked because for the ones I've seen I can't seem to find any paint or something..? I also ask this because sometimes you see they only sell the small part of a propshaft which you need for a 6SPD-conversion. What is the correct way to mount a TT-propshaft? I have seen a few cars now and some propshafts are differently mounted. For instance in the middle with the splines, some I could just pull apart with my hands and another would seem to be locked with the big nut? Could I incorrectly mount the propshaft in the middle on the car or at the diff-side? In the middle there are 2 bolts which both have a big and small washer. At the diff there are 6 bolts/nuts which all have 1 washer. At the gearbox there are 4 nuts with each a washer. Swampy442
In answer to the first part, the whole prop needs to be dynamically balanced.
Mika
In answer to the first part, the whole prop needs to be dynamically balanced. Are you sure that the front and the rear section has not been balanced individually? I just wondered cause mkiv.com has the article in the tech section (6spd conversion) and the guy changes only the front section of the propshaft..? There is nothing mentioned to get propshaft balanced after changing the front piece of it. I`m also wondering the same by my self as I have a low mileage, nice condition 6spd propshaft. My propshaft was pulled apart from the middle when it was packed and shipped out to me. The guy forgot to matchmark it before he pulled it apart. Now I wonder will I have to get it balanced/aligment to eliminate possible wibration out of it. Let me know!
Swampy442
The whole prop shaft spins so it stands it reason the whole prop needs to be balanced. i certainly wouldnt run a heavy, metal shaft at 1000s of rpms without balancing.
