CJ
My tenants have contacted me and said they are having problems with the Combi boiler. Apparently they light the pilot light but after about a minute it goes out. Also, a little orange and red light come on just below the button with an R near it. The boiler is an Ariston although she is not sure of the model number. Is this a simple fix or is the boiler kaput?
Havard
Thermocouple?
CJ
Thermocouple? I read that on another interwebnet site too. Apparently a quick(ish) and cheap(ish) fix. Here's hoping
KamaSupra
Thermocouples are cheap as chips and easy to fit mate, takes under 10mins to fit usually. No worrying about getting hold of one either, you just want a universal thermocouple from somewhere like PTS, Plumb Centre, Wicks or maybe even B&Q. But if you don't know what your doing get in an engineer to fit it
ulysees
mine did the same thing last week, it was the pressure had dropped so i just opened a valve that re pressurized the system to the pressure stated on the boiler and it was fine after that, not sure if yours is the same but maybe they all have the valve to re pressurize? hope this helps
j_jza80
None of the "universal" thermocouples are "universal". They're a pretty standard looking thing, but come with a range of bushes (thread adapters) to suit different applications, but i'm yet to see one that comes with every thread. They often have an application guide on the packet, so check that against your appliance model. The Honeywell ones tend to be the favourites with fitters. TBH I would contact Ariston technical. It sounds like a thermocouple to me, but could be a PCB fault or possibly even the gas valve.
CJ
Thanks for the advice fellas. There are 3 young ladies sharing the house and as I am living out here in Greece i have told them to call a heating engineer / plumber who I have used in the past and have him to take a look. snake
check the water pressure see if its above 1 bar on the gauge on the boiler.
scotty71
I have an Ariston Combi in my place (rent off the Mrs' folks) The boiler is a pain in the ass but we have British Gas homeserve so they keep fixing it as we pay monthly. The main issues we have had are the pressure issues as stated above Also had faulty regulators and TBH the gas man said these are now old units and were never any good anyway The red light is when it is starved of gas and the reset needs to be pressed (the R button). Nothing but trouble check the water pressure see if its above 1 bar on the gauge on the boiler. To increase the pressure let more water in by opening the water valve underneath the unit
CJ
I feel a homeserve contract coming on here!
Rob W
Yea the first thing I would be doing is checking the water pressure in the boiler. Needs to be in the green zone on the gauge 0.5-1.0 bar to start up. As said above, open up the pressure valve underneath to get it up to pressure. CJ
One of the girls has just sent me this: "Well I fiddled about with the taps, and the boiler worked for 5mins, and then cut back out, but niether the hot water or radiators was getting hot in that time, but while its fired up the pressure is above 1" I have asked her to tell me what the pressure is showing before she turns on the system and to also confirm what "taps" she is turning on. snake
it could be the extraction fan cutting out or the diverter valve sticking , if it works on the same principle as a worcester combi.
CJ
I have told them to contact a local Ariston engineer who is located about 4 miles from the house. Lets just hope he doesn't sting them with a big call out charge.
