RedM
How fast in ghz is the Athlon64 3200+? I thought it was 2.2 ghz but our diagnostic s/ware say 2ghz then changes its mind to one. System properties says one as well. Some places on the net that I've tried say 1, 2 and 2.2 ghz! Any ideas? I want to know if some of the games I'm getting will run. Homer
Is it a socket 939? If so I have one of those on my home computer and its 2ghz.
Homer
Just to add - Almost anything will run very fast with the processor, graphics card and good memory configuration will reach their limits a long time before the processor will. Dual channel DDR400+ is essential for this to run fast and if you have a PCI-E video card then you have a system that will be be good for at least a couple of years. RedM
It is a socket 939 and the diag s/ware has just claimed 2ghz after declaring it 1ghz! Next question. Any good for Far Cry and Half-Life 2?
Homer
Next question. Any good for Far Cry and Half-Life 2? Yes, very, very good! I run both of those at 1024x768, 2x AA, High quality options and get an easy 60+ fps. Moving to 1280x1024 the fps drops to 30fps but its still very playable (Even with Doom3 which is THE most demanding game out there). With my previous 1900 althonXP/333mhz memory the fps was almost half this. I have a Radeon 9800 128mb 8x AGP graphics card - the GFX card is one of the biggest factors in games performance. What sort of card and memory do you use? Edited again! - What sort of Motherboard do you have? A lot of the early ones for the 939 had dodgy BIOS. Make sure you update this to the latest version. RedM
I have 512mb DDR but I don't know which type. GFX are handled by, and no laughing at the back please, a PCI-E Nvidia GeForce 6200 Turbocache. I think it uses some system memory to compliment its own and keep the price down. May upgrade to an ATI X700 as they seem fairly cheap right now as long as I can fit it without the missus spotting me!
Homer
I'm no expert on these but I think your current GFX card is going to be a major bottleneck in the system, its only 64mb onboard right? If it uses ANY system memory for gfx cache then the performance will be massively degraded. Not sure about the x700 as I have no experience of it. Good details of gfx (and pretty much everything else is at Tomshardware.com. See http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20050203/index-04.html for a review of the latest gfx cards. carl0s
sounds like a laptop with variable clock-speed (power saving) enabled. Depending on which revision it is, it's actual nominal clock-speed could be either 2.2GHz or 2GHz (2200MHz or 2000MHz) according to http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/Default.aspx

I seem to remember reading something about the '+' revision of the 3200 showing up in diagnostics software incorrectly but I damned if I can remember where. Maybe I'm mis-remembering due to wishful thinking. I have the PC set to minimal power-saving. All it does is shut down the monitor after 15 mins. TLicense
Out of interest, what do you guys make of using SLI? ie two graphics cards, rendering alternative lines? Does it effectively double graphic processing?
carl0s
it does what it says on the tin as far as I know! You need a chipset that supports it and compatible graphics cards though obviously.
