Need more Tech Help - Decat and Oil cooler

Hi Ppl.

 

I came across a SARD sports catalyser for the Supra as per the pic below. It is 75mm(3inch) into 80mm(3.2inch).

 

Is this recommended for BPU on a J spec? Will the boost stay in check without a restrictor?

 

Next dilemma is the oil cooler. I am fitting a Greddy Spec LS intercooler this weekend and I was planning on getting the HKS Oil cooler kit.

 

Which side does the cooler mount on left or right? Does it not interfere with the PAS cooler pipes?

 

Do i really need a oil cooler. Was only planning on an occasional track day,a few drags but basically street use. Would the OEM cooler not suffice?

I did loads of serious track days in my auto TT with no oil cooler. it did see 130 degrees plus oil temps, but given regular changes of decent oil it seemed happy enough, if not an ideal situation. Sometimes adding these things brings unreliability, I have seemed some simply awful installations last year, no cooler would definitely have been safer ;) It might be cheaper, if more hassle, to get an exhaust place to weld in a UK sourced sport cat to a second de cat pipe, how much are these SARD things?

Thanks Chris. I think I will hold off on the oil cooler for now, considering my usage it should be ok with the stock one..

 

I dont need a cat, this is just easier for me to source. The only other option seems to be the 2.5inch decat from Whifbitz...

 

I am getting this SARD for the equivalent of 330pounds. Do you think boost creep will be an issue with this setup?

That seems cheap for the SARD Cat they're normally twice that price. Personally I would just fit a decat pipe/restrictor ring.

 

The HKS Oil Cooler fits in passenger side opening in the bumper, the kit includes everything for the install. The GReddy LS Intercooler includes relocation kit for the PAS cooler.

No idea, it depends how restrictive it is, personally I'd go with the 80mm decat pipes and restrictor ring.

 

Also with boost up, not sure on the effect to EGT.

 

Again it depends how restrictive it is, the cat is at the turbo end of the pipe so possibly could cause an issue at higher boost.

I think I will go for the full decat, the SARD seems to be a bit of a mystery.. You say 80mm, I was going to go for the 2.5inch (63mm) from Whifbitz, thats still ok right?

The diameter won't make any difference, either way you'll still need a restrictor ring to restrict the speed of the exhaust flow and keep the boost in check.

These are the only Japanese branded ones available still. Best to double check the part numbers are correct.

 

3103-RT006 HKS 2nd Decat - 75mm

 

TF345 Kakimoto 1st Decat - 80mm

Nic,the Kakimoto site lists the 2nd decat (pic below) as the part number TF345. Not sure which is correct?

Sorry that part number is wrong, that's for the 2nd decat pipe.

 

They use to do a 1st decat pipe, but looks like it's no longer listed on their site. It's a shame if they've stopped making them as they were one of the only ones available that incorporated a flex pipe.

 

Just had a look back through some business correspondence and found the part number for the 1st decat pipe, it is T-80S

I will check Yahoo Auction, might find one on there..

 

Is having no flex an issue? None of the other setups included it.

No not really the vast majority of decat pipes don't and tend to be fine.

 

It's used to absorb vibration to prevent exhaust welds from cracking over time, the stock 1st cat has something similar for the same reason.

I used a flexible 1st decat and a 2nd decat (referred to as "test pipe" and "front pipe" in Japan) with no restrictor ring before I did the single swap without a problem. I am still learning about turbo systems, but shouldn't the waste gates control the boost?

 

I'm not sure if I still have them, but I could check when I get back if you are interested.

Ok man, check it out, of you could send me some photos and check the diameters when you get back..

 

I think the issue with the supra stock turbos is that the wastegate is too small to keep the boost in check at higher boost levels..
