robby246 Posted February 26, 2011 Share Posted February 26, 2011 seem to have a problem with my battery! ive never had a problem with starting or anything before but all of a sudden my batterys gone dead!! pretty sure its nothing else apart from that, only do short journeys with the car to wrk and that i dnt knw if thats killed it qlong with the bad winter?!! i have a clifford alarm on the car, question is if i disconnect the battery and put a new 1 on will it affect the alarm?? thanks guys Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have a Clifford alarm and disconnecting the battery is no problem - as long as the alarm isn't armed at the time! When you reconnect the new battery the alarm will be in the same state as when the old battery was disconnected, eg, disconnect when it's in 'valet' mode, reconnect and it'll still be in 'valet' mode. SteveC Posted February 26, 2011 Share Posted February 26, 2011 Yes, 'valet mode' is disarmed, but it can be different from just being disarmed as with the remote button depending on how your particular alarm is configured. They can be configured so that even when the alarm is disarmed, it could then arm itself again when a door is closed - and it could even be set to lock the doors as well. Assuming you've got the automatic arming and possibly also the automatic locking enabled, then if you set it into 'valet mode', you can go about opening and closing doors as you wish (you could be cleaning the car) and it won't arm itself or lock the doors. Then, when you take it out of valet mode, it'll return to arming the alarm when a door is closed and locking the doors if that option is also set to 'on'. It's basically the same, but use the 'Clifford' button instead of the 'G5' button: Press 'Clifford' button twice and then the 'padlock' button once. If the battery condition and charging are definitely good, then what you need to do is have the current drain on the battery checked when the car is parked up. If for some reason the current drain is high, then your car won't be able to stand that long and still start. The current drain should be around 60mA (with alarm armed) - or less. Edit. I should add that some of these battery tests aren't that good. They will tell you is the battery will kick out high current for a few seconds with a charged up battery, but what they won't tell you is if the battery is slowly self-discharging. SteveC Posted February 27, 2011 Share Posted February 27, 2011 Yes, it could still be the battery that's self-discharging. All batteries self-discharge to some extent or other, but if they are poor quality or well past their best, then they discharge that bit (or a lot) faster - even if they're not actually connected to anything. If your battery is much more than a couple of years old, then it's probably the battery that's the main cause of your problem. Just to be sure though, have the current drain tested when the car is stood with the alarm on. Anyone with basic electrical knowledge and a multi-meter should be able to do that in 10 minutes.
