Chris Wilson
For the wife, not wanting anything flash or very new, but reliable with either an excellent battery or a price that allows the purchase of a new one. Need a large screen size, and if it had a true serial port it would make *ME* happy as it would be a back up machine for mapping or downloading Motec data to. Software loaded is irrelevant as I'd format it and put XP on it, the new stuff is too new for me to start messing with It won't be used for any games at all, just internet and e-mails. Thanks. Chris Wilson
OK, what about not so large screen ones without a serial port? I'd rather buy from someone on here than Ebay, especially as I am clueless. Got to be 100% working, undamaged and with a decent battery, with charger. Thanks. `Er indoors wants to go on Ancestry Direct. I think it's a mistake and things like that end in tears
caseys
For ruggedness and a serial port I'd recommend looking for a thinkpad T30. You can then always buy a battery from new. Was one of the last thinkpads with a serial port.
MaveriK
Any reason why you dont use a USB to serial converter, would drop the price down a lot or increase the spec
hemmjonny
New ones are cheap theses days, the Samsung range I think are very good for the money.

Chris Wilson
Motec goes a USB lead but it's very expensive. I have never had much success with converters. Power FC software doesn't like them either. I am happy to forego a serial port, it would have just meant I had a back up PC, but it's no big deal. Thanks.
