When are they going to up the standard pence per mile from 40p?!

Thats what Id like to know too.. but then surely the company car driver is taking that money tax free.. so upping the 40p is not in their interests.

Couple of years ago when it peaked at 1.50 petrol prices, alot of on-site engineers i know LOST their own money doing their job.

Sooner or later we'll hit breaking point. People simply can't do without cars.

We hit breaking point when it went to 90p a litre and there were protests and road blocks.

As Monsween said we're still paying and wont stop paying so theres no incentive for the government to reduce tax etc. Plus the fact that alot of garages are franchises anyway setting their own prices.

Hell, I'm buying a smartcar...

Smart move. I bought one 4 years ago. Still got it.

Infact, the video I posted couldn't be more relevant. It contains an in depth analysis of oil/energy production vs. use/population growth. It gives the precise reason for the current petrol price, (manipulation notwithstanding), and if you wanted to, you could make a fortune with this information. Ignoring it is a very bad move.

Oil will probably be over $150 a barrel again quite soon and maybe $200 by the end of the year. Wait until Iran kicks off. Look up Stuxnet virus.

Company car drivers don't get anything tax free. If you use your own car for business you can offset at 40p per mile minus what you have been paid by the company for the first 10,000 miles, then the difference from 24p for the remainder.

If a company car driver gets free fuel it costs a couple of grand a year for a higher rate tax payer.

Strange thing is that right now the petrol retailers are also taking the proverbial. Fuel costs in Europe have dropped so far this year. Think it is about 3% iirc compared to a 5+% increase in the UK.

It's got to stop sometime. Last month I spent over £700 in fuel. In a diesel that does 45 mpg! That was up about £200 on normal, although my mileage was a little higher too. Working for a small business I can see these costs becoming more of an issue going forward.

Maybe we need to remember that it is going to be the poorest in society that are effected the hardest by this and it is taking cash out of the economy that is currently being spent elsewhere. This will impact all businesses. The government have promised the fuel stabiliser but are yet to do anything about it.

My 2p worth anyway.

Sorry, I worded my post incorrectly, i meant to say using private cars for work.

And then my friends who had company cars getting paid 12ppm were out of pocket :)

I am a private car 40ppm claimer and do 25k or thereabouts per year minimum, so the 25p for the last 15k makes a big difference.

But then you have to drive a bluemotion passat so you dont get raped on BIK :p

Know what you are saying there. Saab twin turbo diesel at £200 per month cost. Not the last word in poise or refinement but has loads of kit, is great on the motorway and packs a pretty decent punch.

Seriously considering something smaller next time to reduce the costs.
