preston7
has anyone any experiance with hiace's? i'm a floorlayer with a vito and to be honest it's a disgrace mercedes should be ashamed! so what van would you recomend if i sell my v reg vito. I dont really want it to be any smaller than the vito (last van was a LWB movano and most of the time the size was good! ). Most of important of all though it has to be far better on fuel than the vito and far, far more reliable than the vito. Hiace maybey or just a good old transit? preston7
oh and it would help if it could be stopped from constantly rotting, unlike the vito!
TRD DAN
i have a lwb hiace and its bulletproof , the non turbo one but she just keeps going cant go wrong really , diff mounts wear thats about it and next to no rust dan
tony1
Transit any day. Very reliable, good fuel consumption and when they do go wrong, the parts are not too expensive and easy to get hold of. I'm a carpenter and swear by the Transit because it is the only medium sized van that I know you can get a rack/shelving down one side and still get an 8x4 sheet in flat. preston7
thats why i like the transits, my dad and brothers had a few and i know they are very little hassle and the 8 x 4 thing, I use a lot of ply and the vito is just short of 8' and between the wheel arches is 4' but the doors curve in so you cant slide the 4' in anyway. It aint a massive problem as the ply just goes on the roof it's just that your left thinking wat a stupid pointless design? Whats the hiace like on fuel? Swampy442
Not a van man by any means but VW Transporter? Iveco?
tony1
My Transit is a short wheel base and medium roof. The good thing is you can stand up in the back (aslong as your under 5'8"), I can park it in a normal size parking space but you can not get in alot of car parks with the height barrier. But the best bit is the fact that it fits through the McDonalds drive through so you don't even need to get out for lunch. lol
preston7
vw would be good but are quite pricey, ivecos could be good a lwb daily would be a good size im not sure if it might be a bit heavy on fuel though. I also thought about a vivaro type van but my movano was excellent and tough in everyway apart from the renault engine and gearbox, i replaced the engine when that went but when the gearbox failed i gave up with it, it turns out the renault engines and box's in those vans are known for being weak so thats why im terrified of the smaller renault based vans. Everyone knows toyota's are made chuck norris style tough so the hiace is the favorite at the moment. As is probberly clear though vito's are just awful, I just don't understand how people look at the merc badge on my van and think that that awful thing is somehow better made than my toyota
preston7
lol the drive throughs, I got my lwb movano stuck at a kfc once cos it was too big and the dangling chains at the drive through entrance told me so. I had to abandon the drive through run half way round and go up the grass banking to get out. the bloody thing was leaning over at what felt like 45 degrees, i was terrified. I suppose the lesson is - if a sign says your a moron if you try and force your van where it's not suppose to go, then don't force your van were it's not supposed to go! tony1
The guy that i use to service my van said that alot of people are moving away fron Transits now and that alot of his work is Sprinters. He seems to think that the Sprinter is the way forward.
preston7
yeah older sprinters do have a good reputation, would love the space to get 4m carpet rolls in the back as well, When its raining and i have a carpet job on i miss my big van
wile e coyote
i have a transporter lwb and a crafter which is basicaly a sprinter with dif lights you would prob need a high top transporter to get the 8by4 sheets in but a short wb standard roof crafter will take the sheets side ways in
movistar
I would have a Transit all day long!! with so many options in load, size and power train derivatives it's a no brainer. Transit has been the class leader for years now.

JustGav
I've had a mk2 vw caddy for the past 2 years and it has been a fantastic little runner. Mine was 1.4 petrol and apart from the snapped cambelt yesterday has been superb for bombing around in. Not a huge van but can certainly carry enough around. The 1.4 was spritely that is for sure. EXTREMELY cheap on fuel as well.
