Turbo Shaft play, how much is too much

Since I fires the car up my turbo has developed shaft play.

The turbo was new when fitted with no play at all. Now the car was fired up on Sat, and again base mapped on Sunday. After the car was turned off it was noticed the shaft has about 1mm play in either direction. Now the turbo is getting oil and has a Journal bearing so doesn't need a restrictor as far as I'm aware.

 

Any thoughts

I've just been out and checked it again. I'm may have over estimates the play on it.

I recon it's about .5mm each side instead of 1mm.

I'm just struggling to understand how and why it goes from no play at all to having play when the car hasn't even seen boost yet.

Is it a bb turbo? It's not the side to side play it's the in out play that's an issue.

It's just a journal bearing lee. I'll check the in and out play in a bit but I don't think there is any.

 

Are you sure there was absolutely no play whatsoever when you got it? I mean absolutely sure? I would have thought there would be SOME movement even in a new turbo. With it being journal bearing would it be more or less likely to show play?

 

There was definitely no play what so ever on it when it was fitted. I fitted a set of Whifbitz's hybrid turbos to a friends supra and those had a slight amount of play on the shaft from new, but performed amazingly.

Am I being a little paranoid here.

A journal bearing will/should have some play, imagine an engine bearing it needs a small gap for a film of oil to form, saying that, the last bb shaft i had a play with felt like it was falling out of the housing and aparently it was fine:)

 

thats what i am thinking, when its been running there will be a suface of oil around the bearing (movement) and when left cold there will be lack of oil (not much movement)

oil pressure takes up the side to side play, between bearing and shaft. You don't really want to see in and out play.

 

That's what I was thinking.

 

Is it possible that there was some kind of sozzle or inhibitor that was possibly a bit sticky meaning the play wouldn't be noticed before having it properly ran?

I wonder whose that was ;) The precision DBB's seem to have a lot of play in them, Ive felt 2 out the box units and they all have 1-2mm play in them. I think as Lee said its the in and out play thats an issue.

its like having child before the tuning session John , you begin to notice everything , i can hear that rear wheel woooooooble from here ..... its fine .

I just want everything perfect when Ryan comes up do do his stuff that's all. Odds are, most of this will come apart and go back together before mapping anyways.
