The-Plethora
download Kazaa codec pack, that should have all the codecs you need Xvid, Divx and such, that will probably sort it. Nimo codec pack is also an option but I dont think it is updated anymore.
Homer
Try the codec ffdshow, it should resolve most playback issues for mpeg Also update to the latest media player if you're using that as it will have many more codecs packaged

Homer
I wouldn't recommend downloading a mass codec pack, they contain all sorts of crap which can conflict with "proper" codecs. Try ffdshow first and if that doesn't work report back
BazzaAlpine
Sounds more like a graphics card issue to me but I'm no pro. You say it's a newish PC but it's running XP? :s
Lude
downloaded ffdshow and made no difference, it looks complicated to use/operate?

Angarak
I have an ATI card and I was messing with the video settings in the Catalyst Control Center (CCC) and it resulted in problems similar to yours. I had to reset the CCC to default to undo the changes I made to the video settings and its been fine since. If you have an ATI card, and have CCC installed, reset to the defaults. If you have another brand theres a good chance you'll have a control panel of some sort whereby you can reset the card to its defaults. alex2jz
I'm running Windows 7 and can play any video file using just the standard player in w7 or VLC player. No need for codec packs. I would suggest moving on to Windows 7 and installing the latest video card drivers.

Have you tried VLC Player ? http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ EDIT : NVM Just re-read and noticed you've tried it. Might also be worth trying k-lite codec pack before you jump ship to another operating system.
