Guest hamiltonsupra
People, im on the scrounge for advice again - any would be appreciated. When i first got the Supra it was so low it really was undrivable (avoiding road markings to save my spine). I have just had this changed over to what i think is the original suspension set up - Toyota Tein ? (which seemed in excellant condition so dont think these were the original originals if you know what i mean) Along with this i had all the brake pads and discs renewed and to pass the MOT i put on alloys i had from my FTO -(dont laugh) as the tyres were brand new - wheels 17" and only slighter thinner than the 17s i had on. Before all this work the car ran spot on at high speeds but now i cant go over 60 as the steering wheel shudders uncontrollably and the car is all over the road. Today i had the tracking done and wheels balanced and it made a bit of difference at lower speeds, but now im stuck as to what to try next,ANY IDEAS ?? peter richards
see if you can get some stock alloys on there and see if it still does it
The-Plethora
Have you checked to see if your calipers are siezed or sticking?
Geo
spigot rings?
mikeyh
spigot rings? i would say the same but he wouldn't get a shake at low speed or is it only when you go over 60 mph
Geo
i would say the same but he wouldn't get a shake at low speed or is it only when you go over 60 mph the wheels are off an FTO so im guessing there the wrong type.
mikeyh
i would put your original wheels back on just to see if the problem goes
Guest hamiltonsupra
The wheels were off the FTO but not originals i will put the ones that were running fine back on Its not shaking at low speed (in fact runs fine) only about the 60 mark ?? Will check calipers in morning..... Spigot rings ???
Homer
Spigot rings are used when fitting wheels with a larger centre bore size. They are absolutely essential if the bore size is not exactly the same as the drive flange.
Homer
Just checked, the FTO has a bore size of 67.1, the supra is 60.1, so you MUST get some suitable spigot rings to use the FTO wheels. It will certainly explain why the wheels are not feeling balanced
Guest hamiltonsupra
Ahh thanks this may be the case They were just fired on for MOT but i quite liked the look and thought i would keep them on till i got the others refurbed and a couple of new tyres - so no rush i thought. Will def swap back and see how this goes

mikeyh
:blink:i cant believe the garage that balanced your wheels didn't mention this to you they should know there and then its not a balancing problem:rolleyes:
Nic
I'd also get the wheels/tyres balanced.
Ark
:blink:i cant believe the garage that balanced your wheels didn't mention this to you they should know there and then its not a balancing problem:rolleyes: If the spigot rings pop out, the tyre shops usually balance wheels with them out, same as with the centre caps. Sounds a lot like a bent wheel to me - had it too many times myself. Just a small buckle will have that effect, but will technically take a balance according to the machine so the tyre shop will just pass it along. How much weight did they have to add? Guest hamiltonsupra
CONCLUSION Folks thanks again for the input, it was indeed the lack of spigot rings which was the problem. Now with the new suspension , tyres (went for Uniroyal Rainsport 2), and this problem fixed the car now runs like a dream - well chuffed !
