Septic
I need a program to clean up my system registry and do all the nifty things these programs to such as defragging your comp etc to make it more efficient. I cba to pay for one so I was hoping anyone could let me know what programs are best? Also, what is the best freeantivirus software? I know Avast is good. Anyone know of anything better? ozz
I swear by AVG, never had an issue with it and know loads of people that use it. You don't say what OS you are running, I think Vista and Win7 both have tools built in.
Septic
Sorry. I have Windows
ozz
Have you tried the inbuilt tools (most accessed through control panel, performance). I find most 3rd party software is just a fancy frontend to these inbuilt tools. I find I don't have to do much to these 'modern' OS as I used to with XP. Chris Wilson
Full format and re install always seems the best to me, I hate the registry, I would like an OS from which when you remove an application EVERYTHING is gone and you KNOW it's gone, but with the support, knowledge base and range of applications of Windows. I liked the .ini files of 3.
creative
windoze own defrag tool along with ccleaner to tidy the registry up. thats all i use.
kill1308
Auslogics Disk Defrag is very good in my opinion. I don't use any other kind of optimising tool. Anti-Virus I have a mixture of Nod32 (not free) and Microsoft Security Essentials (free). I'm not a huge fan of registry cleaners to be honest. TubbyTwo
at least once a month mine gets a full virus check and optimise with AVG pro, Ccleaner (wipe free space, registry clean and start up entries) followed by a good old scan with Malware bytes and spybot. Leaves my PC running rather fast. Despite being careful i still mamage to pick up at least 10 bits of malware etc a month.
Thorin
I used to use AVG for years, switched to Avira a long time ago now and it's been fine. Don't bother with these "system optimisers".

All free and does the job nicely. been virus free for years and very rarely have anything found by MWB or Spybot. Then every now and again I run it through an online scanner... trend housecall to be exact, just to make sure AVG hasnt missed anything. jonathanc
I have Windows7 as well and I do a full defrag every month, run CCleaner whenever I have the time and thats about it. Helps if you partition your HDD and also change certain default folders windows saves stuff. You will be improving the boot up speed. Tricky-Ricky
I use CCcleaner works very well and you can quite often remove some stubborn programs and there nasty little clingons:blink: with it, you can kill a lot of unwanted startup stuff too. Used to use AVG without problems ,but due to everyone saying the the 2009 version was crap i went with Avira, but ended up with a nasty infection that i couldn't get rid of until i tried the latest version of AVG, not looked back since:)
