Hi Guys, Ive just bought a new set of Handbrake and Gear gaitors, the handbrake gaitor is fine and looks great but when removing the manual surround panel i cant see how i can get the old gaitor out and the new one in..tried searching on here but just comes up with ones for sale etc..

Looks like there is some sort of weld.. I maybe being stupid but any help would be greatly appreciated...[GRIN][/GRIN]

i was told to dril the plastic bits on the under side of the gear dash panel, fit new gaitor and glue the plastic ring back into place.

There was me thinking it was going to be a simple one out one in job..:( Thanks for that so technically ive gotta snap the ring and then re glue it..?.

no not snap it if you remove the trim piece and turn it upside down you will see a ring of plastic holding the gaiter in place. on the ring there is about 6 iirc little bits of plastic just drill them out carefully. then the plastic ring will fall off and so will the old gaiter. jut place you new one in place and put the ring back in the original position and just glue where you have drilled obv be carefull not to get glue where it shows!

The manual gear gaiter is held in by a number of plastic pins, these go through holes in the gaiter and through a circular plastic collar, the head of the pins are then melted to form a type of rivet that holds the gaiter and collar in place.

You could cut/file the heads of the plastic rivets off, this will release the collar and gaiter. Alternatively if you pull on the plastic collar it will break each pin releasing the collar.

Pretty sure you can buy "plastic solder" kits pretty cheap. Same theory as normal soldering but you use plastic.

Another idea is to get the flattened end that holds the gaiter down removed, then use a product such as this to make a few blobs around where the old melted rivets used to be when you refit the new gaiter.
