Kilps
My PC won't turn on. It shows a couple of the normal white on black loading screens, then the screen where you can select safe mode or whatever then, whatever you select, it shows the Windows logo with the scrolling loading bit underneath, then a black screen, then this screen: Sorry it's sideways, I can't rotate it on my phone ... then it restarts and does the same thing. It was fine before, but the last time I used it I switched it off by holding the power button down. Is this fixable without reinstalling Windows? BazzaAlpine
I seem to remember that there is a command you can run from the command prompt (press F8 to get to the safe mode menu and command prompt is listed there) that will attempt to repair the registry. I can't remember what it is called though
Kilps
Ok, I selected 'safe mode with command prompt'. It adds a load of file extensions in a list at the bottom of the same screen where you select which mode to start in, which scrolls the screen upwards. This stops and stays there for a couple of seconds, then the blue screen shows again and it restarts again. In short, I can't even get as far as the command prompt window! Unless I'm doing something wrong. I thought I had some idea with computers, but I'm out of ideas, short of reinstalling everything.
Scott
If you have a windows installation disc then you should be fine. You can use that to repair the windows install
Kilps
I do indeed! Everyone else is in bed, so I'll dig it out the cupboard tomorrow. I forgot/didn't know there was a repair function, rather than the full reinstall. Thanks people

Scott
Depends on the windows version I think. Windows 7 definitely has it, and it is quite effective. I think Vista also has a similar setup. XP has a recovery console but it isn't as straight forward as the one in Win7. The option you are looking for is "Startup repair" or something like that.
