jake supra
Hi all Iv been looking at RX7 now for a few weeks and im contemplating selling my NA supra for one. Does anyone own a RX7 and how do they compare to the sup power/handling wise. I know the RX7 will be faster than my NA and the engines some times need rebuilds but im still tempted. Any thoughts welcome Jake
stinboy
I absolutely adore the look of the rx7 - however what has put me off is the engine issues. I'm sure it needs rebuilding after about 80k miles or so? I'd do a quick search on here - i'm sure theres lots of threads about it
Bailey.
I love rx7's, but when i owned one i abseloutly hated it, running issues to no end, certainly not the same quality control the tyoyota had with the supras, interior is quite lame. oh actually, i hate them. theres a reason there cheaper than a tt supra, and thats simply because they are not half the car imo. Rob_Mitchell
love rx7's my best mate has one but has invested nearly 18k into it and on his second engine rebuild, so need deep pockets to run one. his is actually a 2 stroke now and 2 stroke oil is not cheap lol and you get weird looks when filling up but they did also win the playboys car of the year a few years back, so do get the crumpet
Evil_Nuts
I had a Feed tuned Rex.....ate my wallet.....dammit
Abz
I believe for the RX7 it is roughly 60k before an engine rebuild but this varies a lot. Some people I know have managed 80k before a rebuild whilst others have managed a mere 30k before a rebuild so it really depends on how well owners maintained the car. Once the tips go, an engine rebuild is really the only option. As it is a simple engine, some say you can do it yourself but after watching video's I wouldn't tempt it myself. Supragirl (I think that is wrong but the username is close to that) she has a lovely black example & owned a very nice aero TT. She could maybe give you a better insight. I think the main thing that put me off is the reliability, it is a lovely looking car but build issues were a concern for me & going into the unknown with the rotary engine. downimpact
Both Rx7's my Brother had spend a lot of time in garages trying to diagnose and fix running issues. Most of the 'expert' tuning houses couldn't diagnose problems on both cars, need a good garage is very important before considering. They do look very nice though
Swampy442
RX7s can be summed up thus, epic handling, predigious thirst for fuel and oil, tight inside if youre over 6ft, will blow up at some point. Mate of mine has a UK spec FC with over 80k on the original engine and still going strong. Another mate had an FD and that let go at 65k (inter rotor water seal failed) Make sure you get a good service history/proof of a rebuild from a competent company
Bailey.
oh i forgot, i managed to get as low as 135 miles to a tank, didnt enjoy that, was a single but still, not a pleasure.

The one I am looking at just had the engine rebuilt. So should be no problems there. Iv had a look at her Rx7 Looks really nice.

Love the look and sound of them myself, being 5'8 don't have trouble fitting in them either, just the horror reliability stories the only thing putting me off. Then again people have swapped in a 2JZ

Scott
This is the one i was looking at: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2403876.htm I have seen that car up for sale before. I recognise the "Rats nest" quote. Seems like the same ad to me, very strange.
Bailey.
Rats nest is what they call the billions of vac hoses under the inlet, common term in the rotary world. or was it birds nest, lol that seems cheap for a rebuild too, no name of builder either?? the reciepts for mine were from wgt and were over £4500 as when the tips go they fly into the turbo, so also had these rebuilt. marc_p
I love RX7s but couldn't live with the engine, if you come across a V8 one, that would be worth a look.

j_jza80
I've only ever driven one, they handle so well, and sound fantastic. More akin to driving fast MX-5 to a Supra.
jake supra
He said it was rebuilt by a guy called Steve Rivett in surrey. Ill go and have a look and see if he has any history or build receipts. Thanks for the input guys
stinboy
Be careful though - sounds like you're determined and why not eh??! Just make sure you research the likely future costs thoroughly! But, just to throw a spanner in, why not an RZ? grin eyewink grin (don't know how to do that on quick reply) grin
TubbyTwo
Been in one, fantastic cars, wanted one badly for a long time and still do. when i have very deep pockets I will have one!
safcdixon
Mine blew up after 250miles of me driving, payed 9000 for it in 2008 sold it last year with no engine for 1700 big huge mistake, there's not many better looking cars though, my opinion don't buy one! buy a tt supra instead! Gaz6002
They're lighter and nicer to drive quickly than the Supra, but are shockingly unreliable in the most extreme way imaginable.
